Can't stress enough how important it is to take your time along Shelter Cove road from Redway to the Cove.  Leave yourself 45 minutes to an hour - see the sights along the ridge above Whitethorn, and be sure to pull off and let locals/faster vehicles pass by.  You'll be there soon enough, and there's no margin for error on much of the road.  ALL vehicles should use low gears on the way down two different ridges - the final descent being long enough to smoke the brakes of any rig.  DON'T MESS WITH IT!  Go slow and use low gears.

Safe travels.   :smt001

Not much coming out of the Cove lately, Andy - it's been windy.  The season opened up here out of Humboldt Bay today and very few boats went out due to wind and swell - no one caught fish.  The wind is up right now, and that bodes well for us...  I hope!  It's gotta calm down sometime.

This time of year can be windy and tough to get out, or you can get a stretch of sweet water and sunshine with the salmon biting even close in to the moorings at the Cove.  We'll get 'em.   :smt001

Check this out from USA Fishing just now:  Shelter Cove:

Captain Trent Slate of Shelter Cove Sport Fishing said, “The weather was horrible on Sunday 4-29 and they couldn't get out, but we were able to get out in the morning on Saturday 4-28 for a troll near the Red Can.” After pulling the crab pots to cull 20 large crab out of the 35 in the five pots, they trolled for three hours, releasing three shakers. Slate said, “I was just about ready to quit when lightning struck, and we hit two doubles in a row within 15 minutes and finished with our salmon limits.” He added, “We got bit again as soon as we got our lines back in the water.” He has his first charter next Saturday for crab/salmon, and he will be running a combination of salmon/crab, salmon/crab/Pacific halibut, and salmon/crab/Pacific halibut/ling and rock cod once the rockfish season opens above the 40/10 line on May 15th.

That's how it is - put in your time and the bite will happen.  (and the rockfish/ling season DOES open the 12th!   :smt012)
