A blurb from a Humboldt Tuna Club report from today at the Cove:

A friend from Sandpoint Id. came down to visit and salmon fish for a day. He picked a GOOD day to fish at the cove. Started at 10am, saw a large group of birds right before the BELL, stopped for no love, decided to troll to the place we got them last time. We approached the whistle from the downhill side and had a hit, that turned into our first fish the day. Green apex 40 pulls on a deep six. Then all hell broke loose doubles and triples reported by many on the radio, every depth, and anything that was in the water. We landed a triple that included a twenty. From what I gathered even a blind mouse would have found food today at the cove.

We finished with limits for three in three and a half hours. Largest just over twenty, smallest about ten, average was about 13 pounds. Very EASY day here today on a beautiful ocean very close to home! Gotta love the Cove!

Stop it, I'm trying not to get too excited and now you throw salmon into the mix!  Can't wait!!  Anybody mooching for the salmon, or are lures (Apexes) working best?

OK damnit, that does it. I'm in for the Friday troll. Do I have to have a downrigger, or can I do without?

Also, I know we need barbless hooks, but do they need to be barbless circle?

+1 on the circle hook question, also DR or Deep Six or both?  I'll bring the arsenal regardless.

Here's the deal:

- circle hooks are ONLY required for mooching.
- 99% of the time I'm trolling my non-circle hook slip rig - it's not hard to troll 1.5 to 2 MPH.
- I do keep some fixed circles handy for when I stop to eat lunch, take a leak, or otherwise work on something so I'm not paddling.
- ALL other times I'm trolling - downrigger is cool, but I've caught almost all my salmon with DeepSix - go with the biggest size, even Double DeepSix.  I've also caught them with a banana weight and a chovie.  Apex is popular at the Cove, and many have been catching without a flasher or dodger.  I run a dodger.
- BE READY FOR SALMON!  I'll be bummed to hear of people not being ready, but I think it's inevitable.  BE READY!!!   :smt001

Rob's on overdrive!   :smt005  I'd say one pound will do, but if you have the lead then go for it!   :smt003

**************************************************************************************

I don't want to be a downer here, but...

When people catch salmon with barbed hooks or otherwise illegal gear it's something that can get around...  BE READY, and encourage your teammates to be ready.  You've gotta go into it with a level of preparation and some level of communication of your intent so that you are never scrutinized for possibly catching a salmon without using the legal gear.

BE READY!!!   :smt001

And don't forget the BIG NET!!   :smt005
