I don't want to sound like I'm preaching but I probably will, and you did say you were rookies.

China Camp this time of year can be a somewhat dangerous place to fish, not to say that it can't be done safely, just that you need to know the possibilities there.  This time of year the water temp can be equal to or less than the ocean, add to that the current that can rip thru there on a big tide, and add in the anchoring up and pulling the anchor at the end of the day and you end up with some chances for a bad day.  And I didn't even mention handling a sturgeon, that's a bit tricky too.

Dress for immersion, do allot of reading in the Safety First section, read the sturgeon article in the articles section, and be prepared.

Be aware that in a current if you get separated from an anchored yak you most likely will not be able to swim against the current to get back and even abuddy on the water may not be much help.

Other than that, Merry Christmas, and be sure to post up a report,

And if you know all this already, please excuse my reminder.

           /Low      Time    Feet    Sunset                    Visible

M   26     High   2:13 AM     5.3   7:24 AM    Rise  8:50 AM      1

Not the best tides but you could launch at noon and just paddle not to far out and fish part of the outgo. Be aware that the gates close promtly at susnet this time of year. 4:57 pm

If u go to china camp, we parked outside the gate and wheeled our yaks down so as not to worry with gate closing. The warden was cool tho and kept the gate unlocked, which allowed us to drive to the launch after a tiring day- we locked it on the way out.
Make sure u have flashlights handy and good luck
