I am so stoked about the change for rockfish and cabs. These are some of the true nor cal fish. The value is up with LMB now so thats seems so right.

You all ready to go back to your statistics 101 classes?

The "size@200" column is the length needed to score 200 points.  It is what we have defined as trophy.

The Median is the point at which 1/2 the entries were above and 1/2 the entries below.

The Max is the highest scoring fish to date per species calculated with the new PPI .  Note some are actually on the low side as we "judged" up the PPI for what we believe a trophy fish is.  For instance, for Mackinaw, the largest one entered to date is only 25.5", far from a trophy size mack.  We judged 33.3 inches to be a better trophy size and thus set the PPI to 6.

The bottom 2 lines show the "Mean of the Median" and the "Median of the Median".  These lines are reported so you can get some idea how the scoring for each species stacks up relative to the rest of the species.  Extra points if you can tell me what the difference is between a Mean and a Median.

-Allen

Yeah, I did some back of bar napkin calculations and they seem pretty fair for the most part, a little unlucky to those pacific halibut guys who have a really tough fish to target, but the same can be said for sturgeon fishermen who have to sit in the wind and rain all day.

definitely true on the macks, the mack entries have been disappointing so far, I try 'em twice a year but havent got anything but rats!

I'll be entering again but just like last year I won't really be competing due to my newest little hobby :)

As to why not coho, if we can't keep coho in the ocean, why allow it for Lake Oroville?! Allen, OK if I mail you a check again? I'll PM you if I can't find your address.

The mean is the arithmetic average of a group of scores. The mean is sensitive to extreme scores when population samples are small.

The median is the middle score in a list of scores; it is the point at which half the scores are above and half the scores are below.

Remember to practice safe knots, because big fish don't just break your line, they also break your heart.

coho are planted in lake oroville from excess domesticated hatchery stock (Aquaseed, Washington State).   chinook and trout have been attempted in oroville before but they have had poor survival rates due to a waterborne virus.  There is a requirement from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for there to be some sort of coldwater fishery in the lake, and coho were the only ones with decent survival.

The largest coho really get in Oroville is 20 (although there have been documented catches of fish in the 30 inch range), so at 5pts/inch that fish would not likely be part of any top 10 competitor's 10 fish.  So it really is a no value fish (for AOTY purposes) anyways.

Looking forward to my first year of donating to AOTY. Changes make sense and look good, thank you to the powers that be for putting this together.

Thank you for posting your questions Rob. Two years ago when the rules were also changed dramaticly and went from 10 to 20 species I was pissed off cause my game plan was gonna have to change. To me......asking questions is good cause it shows that you care about the game. If Allen's answers need more explanation then feel free to pm me and I'll do my best. I'm proud that these rule changes were announced before the contest begins again and the sign-up is open BEFORE XMAS!!!  Know what I'll be asking my wife to get for me now! Thanks to Allen, the other judges, and all AOTY players for another fun year of fishin. Looking forward to next year already! Jim
