I had been looking for a squidder for my brother in law back east, and  had contacted a reputable tackle company down the southern part of the state.  He had what I was looking for and I asked him about some Newell parts for Penn.  The posts and seats used to be fairly common to find.  My source told me the Newell brand is in hard times and the new owner is moving the company once again.  He said he hasn't been able to get a hold of a lot of Newell Parts for quite some time and he was able to sell me some good quality posts.  Searches on Ebay also showed a decreased  amount of Newell items.  I hope it is a temporary thing, but with the times the way they are who knows if another legend is going to fade away or go to parts unknown for production.

I was looking to pick up a purple 220 for my daughter and found out they were having production issues on charckbait.  From what I've found online, after Carl Newell passed another mfg co. picked up the brand and lost the lease on their building.  From what I read it sound like all their stock was packed for a move and the shop has moved but has not released any of the stock or restarted production.  Sounds like they will make another go at it come spring time..

I sure hope they don't fade away, the 220 and 229 have been a mainstay in my quiver.

I ran into this same problem and ended up trying the new Penn 520 mag.  It doesn't have the same light weight and balance of the  squidder but brother, it can throw some line a mile.  I still will get a 229 when the right deal shows up.  I hope they get back on track for everyone's sake--love my Newell tricked out jigmasters forever!

Berrison Tackle has a mint pair of P series 220 and a 229 (at least I seem to recall he had P series).  Shame to hear the Newell brand is in trouble.

Sad. I have an old jigmaster 500l with a newell spool and reel foot. Love to launch that reel from the surf. I had a custom rod built just for the reel. Man what a bum deal to hear... :smt010
