well, i went and did some blood tests, everything came back great but, the last test showed a elevated blood sugar, putting me in the "prediabetic" range... what a surprise that was.

I eat pretty good, but obviously need to elminate sweets...

im just really unsure about the whole carb thing and how to eat? The info online is so much to take in.

Its my understnding if I up my exercise everyday, and eat right, i can stop the progression to full blown diabetes, if not even lower my blood sugar all together. I realize this will be a ongoing thing and I am fine with that, I just want to beat it now, not wait....

Im in fairly decent shape, but there always room to improve. i use to drink, but pretty much stopped a year ago, i was eating sweets ofcourse.

Figured id just post it here in public, incase anyone else finds them selves in this position, total surprise.

I've been "prediabetic" for a few years now. Been as high as 109 , but now I'm around at 100-102.
I eat no sweets and drink less too. Tough to do during the holidays.
Also increased my daily fiber and exercise. It's a lifestyle change.

Hope you're able to get it in balance.
Al

I've been a pre diabetic for 5 years. If you lose 10% of your current weight over 6-12 months, your current fasting blood sugar will go down. It's all about reducing belly fat and weight. How you get there is up to you. I choose to kayak fish more.  :smt006

I was as high as 115 but my last test was 97 which is in the normal range. I got a dog, walk 5 miles every day and lost 5-10 pounds. Stress can also increase your blood sugar and the dog has helped with that too. I also fish every week rain or shine. I put on a few pounds this year but will get it back down next year. The good news is that you don't need medication to get things back to normal. You are young Brent, so making some lifestyle changes now will pay off big time down the road. No worries.

ok, my A1c came in at 5.8, my average glucose was 120, based off that 5.8

I think that 5.8 measures as an average over 3 months.

So i go one of those home test kit deals, all day today I have been hovering in the 81-83 zone. Testing every few hours, just to see if Theres a pattern...

Last night befor bed it was a little high at 115, but nothing like that today....

is that strange to be getting the 81-83 readings? Those are pretty normal right.

according to ADA, im in the prediabetic range with the 5.8 A1c reading..

Brent

I will PM you if you have questions and we can talk in private. A1C is controversial with regard to diagnosis of diabetes or pre-diabetes. The standard is a fasting glucose.  If you are motivated to make changes, you will be fine. There are millions of pre diabetics in this world. What keeps them from becoming diabetics is motivation.

Learning how to eat right is a good start to try to stop diabetes. Its not all about eating sweets. Its  about learning to reduce your intake of carbohydrates and keep your blood sugar level. Your blood sugar spikes about 2 hours after you eat. If you eat a big plate of food you get a large spike and the only way to remove the sugar is with insulin. When we exercise we create insulin from the pancrease and that's the key to removing the carb's. I now graze through the day eat several small meals keeping my blood sugar at a lower level without big spikes this will help to keep your average down. Genetics has something to do with it as well. My mom was a type I and my father type II. My two brothers don't have it and we were all active is sports and kept fairly physical. But I still have my good looks and hair where the don't.  You can slow down the process by learning what works for you. Learn what carbohydrates are the little bastards hide in a lot of things not just sweets its bread, white flour, wheat flour, some veggies most fruits. Keep your fiber high. Its slows the absorbsion of the carbs. Learn how to carb count. A quick example you are going to have a snack that has 18 carbs and 5 fibers and you are allowed 13 carbs for a snack. That snack now is worth 13 carbs so it is ok to eat. You can subtract the fiber from the carbs but the fiber must be over 5 to work. You want to learn now what works for you and pass it a long to your friends and family my parents did not do that. I don't know if I would have helped. learned anyway cause what you have to look forward to is a lot of crap if you get diabetes.
I hope this helps. In most cases it is preventable for some it is not.

Good luck and best wishes from a guy that wishes he was not a diabetic.

Kevin,

Thanks for your input, it all helps. The carb counting is what sounds tough, sweets are easy, Ill just avoid them all together.

Fiber... Whats good to eat that supplies fiber?

I just tested 2 hours after my meal, it was 87, the high for today, so far...

Better make some lifestyle changes now or regret later, bro. Taking blood sugars 3-4 times a day plus taking insulin isn't fun. More and more people are becoming diabetics nowadays.

After my trip to the sandbox in 2005 I was diagnosed as being diabetic.  My pre-deployment physical was fine and my post physical wasn't.  There is a lot of discussion about the burn pits, chemicals and other things that go on over there.  Hard to say, my feeling has been some of the vaccines of the time that were given to us. The Anthrax vaccine continues to be controversial in its use, not to mention its effectiveness.  That said, I have to watch all the time now, and I try to exercise regularly.   My A1c has been between 5.2-6.4.  Exercise, cutting back on certain foods, avoiding processed foods as much as possible will make a huge difference.  Losing weight also adds to the overall effectiveness of your program.  Don't go crazy but develop a varied regimen.  I once read walking to miles a day for year will keep 20 pounds off as opposed to sitting in front of the TV.  Holidays are really a challenge.  Treat your self from time to time, but don't over do it.  If you try to go cold turkey on everything that you think is bad for you, you will, most likely fail.
