Unfreakinbelievable.

I think "Project White SharK" needs to be de-funded and discontinued. :smt011

Very disappointed...  :smt012  Didn't know it was common practice to "release" a dying shark so they cant be blamed for it...

I know they do some good things through the MBA, but IMHO the shark thing is pure $$$ motivated. It's "legal" poaching. To me its not really any different than the Japanese taking whales for "research" & then selling the flesh at market. It totally undermines any of the positive things that might come from the aquarium research.

the shark dies after weeks in captivity & they "don't know why". There's a wildfire in big basin 24hrs after a "controlled burn", its in the exact area as the "controlled burn", but CalFire "doesn't know" how it could have started. Shall we look at the most probable answer first in both of these cases?
Grrr, the news is making me grumpy today.
why cant these orgs just 'fess up sometimes?
ok, rant off.

It's no different than throwing one in the back of a pickup and charging admission for a few hours then throwing it back in the surf to flounder.

End result is the same.  Dead shark, and money in pocket.

Awww.....cmon guys. Wasn't it worth putting another species one step closer to extinction so da touristas could get their jollies.

This is where someone chimes in and tells us how 'necessary or cool' it was for their child to see the shark through glass in a tank rather than video of real natural behavior in the wild.  :smt012

:smt012 Hmmm... All things considered. I think that one out of 6-7 sharks released croaking shouldn't condemn this program. They really do learn a lot and educate more people that might get one fishing and kill it (like me! :smt044 ) I support this program but not the politics of MBARI and no longer go there or renew my yearly pass. :smt011 I saw 2 sharks there and was Awed by them and lost a lot of  "JAWS" type fear... RIP Sharky
my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

The MBA actually pays fishermen for sharks caught in nets. They make it appear as though they're rescuing sharks, but the halibut fishermen who typically catch these juvenile great whites have every incentive to catch one when the MBA will buy it from them for $2000.

They've been saying that for years but not once have I heard them cite a single fact or new discovery learned from their program.  Other than "how to keep a large predator in a fishbowl" they haven't learned squat.

I saw a video clip of the release on the news, the thing was in pretty bad shape when released, it swam off at a list then started to circle back to the boat before finally swimming away, it probably did die shortly thereafter, as a direct result of their "program".  Most of the time the most logical explanation of an event is the correct one.
