Was at my parents house last week and my dad had a couple of pictures of the truck he was driving in 59' the year my older brother was born I happend along the next year... so I took a pic of a pic  :smt003 also a picture of the largest tree harvested "The Pual Bunyan Load" early 50's!!!  I was raised in Mendocino and am a third generation logger. we moved to Wy in the 70's for logging along with a lot of local loggers (Star Valley) and started falling timber at 16 full time...came back to northern Cali in the early 80's and fell timber till early 90's one of the biggest trees I put to bed was an old tree that was left do to "no way" to put it on the ground back than...had to be jacked up the hill (they didn't have the tools in the early days) where it topped out at was 8'  no pics of that tree...I've put a larger one to rest 13' on the butt but it was black walnut!!!

Just Curious where peeps are coming from...and it's a lot different from where we started out!!!  there are "no" 4th gen loggers in our family!!! :smt002

Cool photos, Sledge!

My dad started out as a postman after leaving the USMC, worked his way up thru management while attending college, ended up as director of finance for the region.

Coincidentally, a "Paul Bunyon load" is what my wife says I drop after eating a big Mexican dinner the nite before...   :smt005

my father grew up in Japan during WW2 and worked as a teenager in a factory that made torpedo's with a drivers seat.  Seriously, and there was no escape pod.  His specific job was as a lookout for US bombers.  When he spotted them he was to sound the alarm.   After the surrender, he worked for the Americans guarding a supply of Coca Cola.  :smt003

He came to the US in the fifties and started as a farm worker, then a gardener, then started the rose operation that I continue today.  Went from zero to business owner in a short span with no money, no college degree, barely spoke the language but worked his ASS OFF.

Awesome...it's funny I've been in third world countrys and everyone wants "The American Dream" but what's not funny is So many have it right in front of them and they don't take advantage of what "we got"... many risk life and limb to come to America and "Get Some" yet the average american is lazy!!! :smt009  Not all but...

PROPS to your POPS for getting his slice and helping you get yours!!! WTFGS!!!!  being the OWNER is 7/24 never ending!!! But the payoff is HUGE!!!  :smt044 :smt044 :smt044  Thanks!!!

Man,,,  that question brings back a lot of memories.     Paul Martin was a WW2 vet.  Shot up twice during the war. I remember some nasty scars across his shoulder and back .  He was one of those paratroopers with the 101st during D-Day.     Second time, a year later he almost lost his leg.    Worked as a foreman and shop steward for Safeway plant in San Leandro for 20 years.  Then became a business agent for the ILWU  ( longshoreman and warehouse union) in Oakland.
The man sure loved to hunt game birds. Was good at it too,  fast with a shotgun.     Wish I had a buck for every duck I'd plucked...  I'd be a rich f   person.

My dad was drafted into the Army during Vietnam. He did his tour then re-enlisted and did another. He ended up retiring from the Army.

After that he worked for the Humane Society for quite awhile, now he is pretty much retired but still does some dog training lessons a few hours a week.

My Dad was born and raised in Iowa, loved sports and made them his job.
After graduating from the University of Iowa he was offered a pro baseball contract, but turned it down because back in his day they made less money than teachers and like occupations. (Boy times have changed)
He did a stint in the USMC as a Lt. then returned to college to get his Masters Degree in physical education and met mom and got married and had me in 56.
He was offered a job teaching PE and coaching in Riverside Cal. and we moved there when I was 1 yr old.
He taught PE and coached various high school sports and retired after 35 yrs.
He is 81 now and living in Oceanside Ca.
He has 3 sons that all followed his lead,
I teach and have coached,
one brother just retired a full bird Colonel after 30 yrs. in the Marines,
and my youngest brother is a teacher and has coached as well.
3 chips off his block :smt002

Baptist preacher.
He came to the US for the American dream, and found a calling to be a minister instead.
