Montauk Long Island is considered the surf fishing capital of the world,  but when you get good weather around Columbus Day weekend and you can get a kayak through the surf...it also becomes the kayak fishing capital of the world, (well maybe the east coast anyway).

Me and several other kayakers headed out and fished this past Sat. thru Mon. and had three of the best kayak fishing days in a row that any of us could remember.  The weather was in the high 70's, almost no wind and walk in conditions for 12 launches and landings.

We encountered about 6-8 hours a day of insane blitzes that were acres and acres in size with striped bass between 15-25 lbs.  and albies in the 10-12 lb. range and just too many bluefish in the 10 lb. range.

We all averaged about 50 fish per day and a couple guys with fly rods did even better.  There was plenty of action outside all the major blitzes,  but once the fish had the tiny bait fish to the surface,  it was pretty easy throwing soft plastics just outside the schools of fish.

Here is a video that shows the blitzes that we fished for 3 straight days.  I didn't take the video but a guy I know took it and sent it to me.

Here are a  few pictures from the weekend.

We really lucked out with the weather because it has been blowing at about 30 knots since we left and it doesn't look like it will be kayak fishable for at least another week.

Nice!

Thanks for the East Coast report. FYI - this thread will probably be moved soon.

Allen,   thanks for moving the post!    I really wish you could have joined us and got into some of the most insane fishing we have ever encountered.   Between me and about 6 other kayakers,  I think our totals for the 3 days were in the hundreds.   I actually stopped fishing on Monday evening because my hands looked and felt like they went through a meat grinder.  I could not even grab another fish and just watched hundreds of bass just swimming around.

It was really an amazing 3 days on the water!

Amazing how the east coast striper fishery has improved so much. I went to high school in Virginia Beach, Va. and stripers were not a common catch back in the mid 70s. Bluefish were crazy though back then and they were big and marauding the beaches. They would even chase large sea trout (weakfish) up onto the beaches. Just chuck out a big Hopkins and hang on.

The east coast has some great fishing.

I'm just wondering where all the rejuvenated east coast stripers are spawning now. Is it the cleaned-up Hudson???

Thanks guys!!!!  Here is another video taken from two guys in a tandem kayak that I didn't know,  but we fished pretty close for all three days.  What is amazing is that with all the fish that you see,  it wasn't as easy as you would think to hook up.  The fish were crashing rain bait,  or also know as bay anchovies,  which are about 1 inch in length.  We had to try and cast the smallest soft plastics that we had with 1/4 oz. jig head.  Sometimes it took about 10 casts into this boiling action before we hooked up.  Like I said,  the guys fishing with fly rods did much better.
