I was reading some of the articles on PAL's writer's website www.outdoorscribe.com.  In doing so I followed a link to a site called "the log" and a section called "FishRap".  Anyway, one of the fishrap news pieces was about the upcoming Southwestern Yacht Club's fishing tournament.  Check out the winning fish from last year.  Can anyone else spot something odd in this photo?

Here's the actual link...

The Southwestern Yacht Club (SWYC) Anglers' 36th annual Bottom Fishing Tournament will be held on April 29 out of San Diego Bay. The tournament is part of SWYC's "Benefit on the Bay" with proceeds from the entire weekend going to San Diego Hospice and Palliative Care Facility. Over the past few years, more than $165,000 has been raised through the efforts of Southwestern Yacht Club.

The 2006 tournament includes a Perpetual Club Award for the fishing club with the most weight of qualifying fish, plus individual awards for the largest rock cod taken in each women, men and junior category as well as the largest rock cod taken on a sailboat. There will also be a special award given for the largest lingcod.

Southwestern Yacht Club has adopted San Diego Hospice as the benefactor of its annual fundraiser "Benefit on the Bay." This event has been responsible for a major portion of this fundraiser. Funds raised in the tournament will ensure that terminally ill patients throughout San Diego County receive the care that leads to a better quality of life. San Diego Hospice is currently serving as many as 500 patients each day. All proceeds from the tournament go directly to the hospice.

Details of the tournament, as well as Boat Registration Forms and the Rules and Regulations, can be found at www.southwesternyc.org. For more information, call (619) 276-5655.

Looks like she's standing at the docks, I doubt they released it.

Okay, the question was a bit retorical, but the point is I can't believe someone would run a tournament and allow an illegal fish to win.  Not only that they posted the illegal fish and the name of the person who caught it.  I think someone should call 1-888-DFG-CALTIP.

Perhaps caught in Mexican waters?  Are they legal there?

hey guys, being that SD bay is relatively close to mexican waters do you think it was maybe caught south of the border? i know that SD guys routinely go to los coronados to fish even just for an afternoon. I was on a 17 foot boat that took all of 20 minutes to get to Pukey Point where we could have banged some Black Sea Bass had we been in the mood. We chose not to.

As for DFG laws, if you get cowcod in mexican waters, can you bring it in and keep it legally of course after filling out the papers? DFG provides forms for those fishing out of State waters.

If this was caught in Mexican waters as a lot of rockfishers do in San Diego then I would think it would be legal. With the number of anglers in San Diego and out all the landings you would think that someone would be wiser than to post something like this had it been illegal.

Just a thought :smt003

Thanks for the clarification, I forgot about the possibility that Mexican waters might have been included.  Anyway, I went to the SWYC site and found the regs for this year.. seems that Mexican waters are fine, but this year Cowcod are not allowed.

Sorry that the fish was taken but I am rather glad to see one.  I thought they were much lighter in color.

It looks like it was photoshopped as well. I mean her had looks like it is at an awkqard angle and the fish is as stiff as a board.

I thought it was a fishing hook at first as well but now I think it is the big hook on a scale.

Well, if  you catch one it's pretty much dead, might as well keep it IMO.
The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee
Superior, they said, never gives up her dead
When the gales of November come early.
