I was at the 9th Ave Farmer's Market yesterday in SF and the fish seller - From the Sea to You - had California Seabass and White Seabass. I asked what a California Seabass is and he said it's sort of like a swordfish or halibut...um, I can't think of 2 fish that more different. So I asked if he had a head from the California Seabass. He did - it was a WSB. I told him that it was a WSB, but he said, no, WSB have "rounder" heads, whatever that means. Unfortunately, he didn't the head of whatever he thought a white seabass is, but it had me wondering.

He seemed irritated by my questions, plus I had no intention of purchasing fish, especially from someone who doesn't know what they're selling, so I wandered off.

It's funny how fish sellers make up appealing sounding names just to fool customers. They also had "Corvina Seabass" and "local" red snapper. Ha!
May the fish be mighty and the seas be meek...

You should've whispered in his ear that you'd like to know how much for a big ab meat...   :smt009

I don't think these guys are deliberately dishonest, at least no more than any other fish seller, and they don't sell farmed salmon which is a HUGE plus in my book. It was just fun to hear his answers. Fishmongers say the darndest things!
