Wow, the American River seems to be kicking out salmon over the last few weeks. I have never driven the distance. Need to add to my list of "want to go someday". Question for the us up here in Redding. Is there any safe place to replicate what everyone is doing on the AR on the Sacrmaneto. That big river looks nasty to me. Seems like the time the salmon get up here they are beat to heck and the meat is not suitable for anything. What sayth here in the north valley state? :smt006

Dave, the AR has there own stock of fish just as the Sac does. Most fish Im seeing and catching right now are all still chrome with scales still on them..these fish are just hauling ass up here from the ocean. really good lookin fish. The area from howe and watt ave is totally fishable and quite an easy and pleasant area to fish!

Dave, for the upper reaches in our area it's an un-tapped resource.  Tim and I have had some discussions, and when the run builds (early October) we're going to do some recon trips in the Cottonwood to Red Bluff area.  I've bank fished with limited success, river boat fished with better success, and to pull a 30lb slug out of that current with so many obstacles/boat traffic will be quite a challenge from a yak.  But, all these AR reports have my mind spinning too.

By the time the fish get up here (150 miles of fresh water), they have lost much of their luster, but I have pulled fish out that still shed scales and have nice pink meat...not all of them are on the verge of death.  :smt002

A few years back in October I drove past the hatchery after work one day and caught some older fish that were not so great. I actually kept the best one and found the meat had no orange left. I miss the Feather River and Butte Creek runs of chrome bright fish. That shows you how long ago that was. Is the Sac manageable down past cottonwood in a yak? AR seems like it would be a doable one day run and then I could say I did it.  :smt001 Can you hear the sound of your reel now?

Your're definitely spoiled with those hogs you pulled off Trinidad, so anything from the river will pale in comparison.  The Sac in that area is a blast, I've floated form Redding to Red Bluff and the scenery down there is awesome.  Flows should be dropping in the next few weeks making the yak fishing prospects more favorable...I'll keep an eye on things.

The only area I have fished the Sac was down stream on that long gravel area I believe south of the barge hole and that was from shore. Is RBC RedBluff cliffs? and by my answer...never been threre.  :smt001 There are a few evenings where I could slip away from work and get a couple hours in before dark or it is the weekends for me now. I would be game to try except even the flat areas around that gravel area really moves. Maybe jigging in the holes would work. We have to figure this out.... and tap into our resources :smt001
