Me and my buddy Eric ran out of Monterey on Sunday night @ 12 midnight. The ride out was beautiful and we were doing 8-10 knots. Our plan was to check out 36.07/122.45 where they caught some tuna the day before. We arrived at our destination around 0530, shut her down and have a quick breakfast (spam & egg over rice). Started trolling the area around 0600 and the water temp was 58-59. Trolled the area for about an hour with no hit so decided to start trolling south a little bit. I noticed one boat working the same area that we were as we trolled south, they were heading out . We hit the northwest edge of the Davidson and the water temp shot up to 61 from 59 and in 5 minutes after that we had our first tuna (20 lbs) of the year on the meatline. We were @ 35.55/122.50 and we worked that area the whole day for 15 fish range from 10-25 lbs. We had 3 fish on the meatline, the hot lure was the zucchini & rootbear. We quit around 3:30 pm and made the long ride home. We were about 65 miles from Monterey harbor.

As we were heading in, I noticed the weather had picked up a little bit and we were doing 7 knots going ino it. We decided not to head to our direct course which is towards Pt. Pinos because of the swell & windwave coming right at us. We decided to head a little bit to the south so we can run paralel with the swells. This course will put us just outside Pt. Sur and then we can fight our way back north. The plan worked out fine as we were doing 11-12 knots coming in and the weather got really nasty. As soon as we turned and headed north, it was not a fun ride as we were pounded big time by some nasty swells and windwaves all the way home. It took us about almost 8 hours to get back to the coast guard ramp. We heard a call on the radio from a guy on a 22' Whaler and he said that he only had 4 gallons of fuel left and they were about 10 miles from the harbor. That same guy came back on the radio later on and said they ran out of fuel and that they have the chute out. He indicated to the coast guard that he was just outside Carmel area but he sounded like he was a little further south because he was breaking up on his radio transmission. We tried to call them to get their coordinates so we can relay it back to the coast guard but no respond. Once again he came back on the radio and said he had someone onboard going into hypothermia and needed medical attention but this time we were about 1 mile from the Monterey harbor when that call came in, once again we try call them back and no respond. Finally heard the coast guard calling them and told them they will send there 47' foot boat out and the ambulance will be waiting at the ramp. We finally arrived at entrance of the Monterey harbor at around 11:30pm, as we approached the ramp, the coast guard recue boat headed out and there was an ambulance and a fire truck at the ramp waiting. Hope those guys made it out alright and the one that was going into hypothermia is ok. Overall great first tuna trip of the year except for the ride back. Here are some pictures and still working on the video..

Thanks for the awesome report.

I read on CS that they got back to the harbor and you have to give it up to the boat captain for posting the details. It was a hefty bill but at least they were safe.

Great report I.Y.!
My buddy went out the day before you did (Saturday) with a few other boats.
They left Monterey Harbor at 5 am and were heading back in by 11:30 am with 11 Albacore on the boat. The other boats had 6 - 8 fish.
He said it was the greatest day of fishing to date!
Thanks for the awsome report!

On a boat and hypothermic  :smt009

Center Console boat, little protection from the elements if you don't have foulies you will get wet, especially in sloppy weather.

Nice score on the albies.
