Our Newest Great White Shark Now on Exhibit

We're excited to announce that we just placed a great white shark on exhibit! The young shark, a four-foot, seven-inch male weighing 43 pounds, was collected by our husbandry staff on August 18 near Marina del Rey, California. Since then, the shark has been in an ocean holding pen while we confirmed that he was feeding consistently and swimming comfortably in the enclosure.

We hope he'll remain on exhibit for several months to help change public attitudes and promote protection for this magnificent yet much-maligned ocean predator. We are still the only aquarium in the world ever to keep a great white shark for more than 16 days.

We're in our 10th season of white shark field research and what we’re learning will help protect these remarkable animals for future generations.

Yeah I was thinking the same, Salty. I really do love these amazing predators and to me there's just something that seems wrong about the way MBA "non-hype" hypes them, y'know?

In the end it is because they bring in huge $$$ while the fish is incarcerated.

I am taking to my 4 year old daughter to see it.  I am sure other parents on this site will also.

Here we go again: the MBA setting a double standard for itself to allow themselves to fish for a protected species.

My brother wrote this article about the MBA's great white program a few years back. Worth a read:

Mel, I've got no problem with educating kids about sea life. I went to the aquarium once right after they completed building it back when I was living in PG. That was before I knew what the aquarium's owner was all about of course. Somebody should ask the staff there if they think they're any better than the young men who recently caught and killed a baby GW off a pier in Socal. At least those young men thought theirs was a mako. Thanks, jim

Jim - This is an opportunity for thousand's of ordinary folks to see a great creature.  It reminds me when I was kid reading National Geo Magazines over and over again.  Reading and seeing pictures of places, other people, animals that I may never see in my lifetime.  There is also the benefit of educating thousands of people who will protect and admire these animals.

Mel, that is all true. So as long as fishermen understand what there aquarium admission money will be used for.....then they can let their conscience be their guide. Just a few years ago I think many fishermen never thought that aquarium would help close down large parts of our coast. My motto is "Don't feed the shark". jim
