Thanks for posting those Danny.  I've been remiss in my photo posting duties.

I'll add a little commentary.  The first pics of coppers and quillbacks was what we got for dinner the first night.  We arrive in the late afternoon and immediately went fishing.  The wind was up so we were relegated to the inshore kelp beds.  If was rockfish after rockfish as fast as you could drop a lure.  But Bill did get into a nice halibut, a 45 pounder in 35 feet of water in the kelp!!!

We always try hard to avoid the yelloweye because they are almost always caught in 180+ feet of water and are pretty much dead.  It may look like we caught a lot, but appearances aren't everything.  We did get 4 one day and that's what you see on the cleaning table.  We maybe got 5-6 the whole rest of the trip.  But man ... they sure are good eating!!!

That pink was caught way up Very Inlet.  It's a 5 mile paddle to the very back where there is this little stream loaded with pinks.  We go up there more for the scenic paddle, but wetting a line at the end is a good way to kill time waiting for the tide to turn.  We ride the tide in, and through some narrows that develop small tidal rapids, then wait for the tide to turn and ride it the other way.  I brough a fly rod and was doing pretty good on it.  Dave wanted to give it a try so I handed him the rod right after I had just cast it.  The fly was sitting out in the stream and Dave asks, "what do I do?"  I respond, "don't worry, you'll figure it out".  He then takes a strip of line and yells "Fish on!!!".  I love it when a plan comes together!

We didn't get many silvers on this trip.  I got a small 4 pounder the second day.  And Bill got the one in the picture the last day.  We proceeded to roast it on a cedar plank right in the fire.  We also took a chunk for sashimi!

There was one feeder king caught on the trip too, in addition to a bunk of pinks caught in the salt.

We did have one interestinh encounter with "Danny the crazy Scot".

Danny had paddled up to Ketchikan from Vancouver.  Here's where it gets interesting.  He decided to do this on a whim after only 4 days of kayaking experience.  He stayed with us for a couple of day and we kept him well fed with fresh fish and a few beers!  Check out his blog.

Great Reporting... Allen I see you guys camping along the coast, how many miles do you cover for whole trip and how many a day??? I'm guessing weather dependent... Unlike your Mex trip where it's mothershipping to different locations... This AL trip is what I envision as an Ultimate fishing experience!!! would like to know more details to participate in future...Looks like it rocks... :smt044 :smt044 :smt044

We base camp it from one spot the whole time.  You can fish 100 yards from camp ... for small rockfish.  Go about a mile to a mile and a half for better halibut fishing.  These are 5 days trip.

Looks like 2012 is already sold out ... http://ketchikankayakco.com/Remote_Trips.html

Awesome stuff!  Alaska is a dream for lots of us - hopefully some day...   :smt007

You guys who haven't joined us at Shelter Cove should consider doing so for a little taste of Nor Cal Alaska-type stuff.   :smt001

That's like offering a guy a sip of beer when all he really wants is a keg.   :smt005

Yeah, but the beer's in "Nor Cal", and the keg is an expensive journey...   :smt004

If catching Pacific Halibut in California doesn't do anything for ya, I think you need AA.   :smt003  Oh yeah, there was that 38 pound king I caught at the Cove too...   :smt008

How many man hours of fishing go into catching a halibut at Shelter?  Let's see roughly 100 participants at GS spending 8 hours on the water each for a total of 1 halibut, which is 1 halibut for 800 man hours of fishing.

We had one morning in which 20 halibut were caught by 6 people in 3 hours.  That's 1.11 halibut for 1 man hour of fishing (or 888 halibut in 800 man hours of fishing).  The fishing is 888 times better in AK.

Let's see ... a sip of beer is about 2 ounces.  There are 1984 ounces of beer in a keg.  So a keg has 992 times more beer than a sip.

My analogy wasn't that far off.   :smt044

Headline:  "Owner of Nor Cal Beats Down Nor Cal!"   :smt005

Just kidding, Al.  You've obviously got a great thing going up there, and Shelter Cove or anywhere else in the lower 48 doesn't measure up to Alaska.  I was just suggesting that you guys who haven't joined us at Shelter Cove should consider doing so for a little taste of Nor Cal Alaska-type stuff.   :smt001

I understand though that, with next year sold out already, you need to start working on selling out 2013.   :smt002

Don't give in to my jackass tendencies, Papa Al - my true heart just wants you and other members here to make it to the Cove with us if you can.  I love to meet and paddle with all who come, and I'll roll out the red carpet for you if you can make it.

Hopefully I can fish with you way up north - probably not until my kids are big though.   :smt001

I need to work on Howard to open up a special trip for NCKA next year.  Anyone here seriously interested in that?

Couldn't make Mexico or the Mothership tuna trip this year, so I'm due.
