I have a 2011 revo and as subjected above, my concern is can the wedgelock for the rudder somehow thin out the line that holds the rudder locked in place, or have you guys come up with some other way to lock your rudders? I've thought of using an open eye stainless steel bolt so that the handle will just hold onto the eyelet of of the open eye bolt............ help?

Cam cleat? You could use it for QRAS as well.

I've been using the factory cleat to lock down the rudder since I got mine with no problems. If the spectra cord does someday break it can be replaced. jim

Thanks guys, yeah, cam cleat  :smt005.  I guess I'll be using what's on the boat for now.

I never lock mine down and it's never been a problem.  I pull the cord and let it go back in and the rudder stays in place.  The only time it comes up is when I pull the "up" cord.  Am I missing something?  I've had my Revo a couple of years and it's been used in the Ocean lots of times in all kinds of conditions, including Albion this year.  When are you guys having issues with the rudder coming up?

+1 on never having to lock it on the Revo. Does your Revo come with a pre-installed cam cleat?

mine has a cleat and I use it every time. I can understand the concern with it wearing down the line. I won't use it and see what happens.

Revo or Adv? My 2010 Revo didn't have one and I was just curious about it.

My first OB from 2007 didn't have it and I never had a problem.  My new 2010 OB has it and a few times I didn't use it, the rudder kicked up on me just after I depoloyed it while launching.  This happened to me at the Bean last year  :smt009  Just after launching and timing everything I launched and deployed rudder and started paddling like mad for the exit when all of a suddden I was doing a 180 and headding back for the beach!  I actually quickly re-deployed the rudder and hopped up on the peddals and did another 180 and hauled ass to catch up with the rest of the guys launching :smt044  Had never used the peddles in a launch before, but it worked out that time for me.  Since then, I always use the cleat.

FYI, without locking the down line in the cleat there's nothing to keep the rudder fully in the down position. If a wave, swell, kelp, or whatever pushes the rudder up at the wrong moment you may find out the hard way the purpose of locking the rudder in the down position. jim

Amen, Jim.  When I took my boat out on its maiden voyage at FR this last sunday, I paddled out to the clearing, dropped my drive in and off i went.. until I started veering hard to port and I wasn't getting any response from my rudder.  I would stowe the rudder and drop it and repeated this a few times with no response from the rudder I tried one last time before I decided to paddle it but this time keeping an eye on the rudder as I pedalled.. I noticed that the rudder was loose, flailing in a way.  My first yak was a Perception Search 15 and it had a rudder whereas the lines ran on the side of the boat and when I deployed the rudder it would automatically stay locked.  My Revo is a totally different story.  I didn't figure it out until I saw the cleat and put two in two together........ to which afterward I could hear the fish below me laugh  :smt044.  *Shrugs* I just picked it up 48 hours before that launch, anyway below are the pics as to what I'm referring to.  Pic 1: cam cleat/ rudder wedge lock, pic 2:rudder down and locked, pic 3: rudder down but unlocked (notice the main rudder line is loose and not taut) pic 4: rudder locked, main rudder line taugt.  I'm just a little concerned for the line that gets wedged in the locked position (pic. 2).  Thanks for all the help and input, guys sorry for the blurry pics.

I guess that makes sense.  Hobie wouldn't have put that cleat there for nothing.  I just never thought about what it might be for.  Do the Adventure and Outback have the cleat too?  I guess I should start using it.

 :smt005 :smt005 :smt005 I never knew that either. I've had some a issues of
the rudder coming up slightly but I thought because I didn't pull down hard enough. Thanks for pointing that out Pern. BTW, how do you like your new ride?
