Being new to this free dive thing, I know I could use a float line, but not sure how long and where is the best place to get it. I would prefer to give the $$$ to one of our own, Someone suggested to have EWB make it?
Also will be looking for a good deal on a gun 24"- 36" ???????
Any advice appreciated.

If EWB is up for it, I'd for sure tell you to go with a 50 footer from him. As far as a good gun goes, Mako's are the right price. Next time I go out, I'll post a hookup and if you can make it, I've got a pole spear and a Mako gun your welcome to use.

How deep do you plan on diving?

I started with a 50 footer and it can be an unbelievable pita dealing with the excess line dragging through the kelp, especially if you're not diving that deep.

You could get a 30 and add a 20 detachable, so your covered.  But the attaching point has a higher possibility of getting snagged compared to a solid 50.

I will be at Manchester this weekend with two Makos. You are welcome to meet up and try them.
Everybody dies, not everybody lives. What did you do today?

Thanks for the offer Amphibian,
If I wasn't already hitting the MBK derby I would take you up on that.

I may get in the water after the derby just to try things out.
Any others?

I have a 30' white floatline and think it's pretty useful for abs and shallow harvesting trips.  At this point in your diving I would recommend a 30' or there abouts because you won't be going deeper than that.  When you get to the point of diving beyond the length of the floatline, you should have enough experienced enough to decide on what you want then.

I think it's also good to have more length on your floatline than you can dive because the more that floats on top of the water, the easier it is to spot if you drift away from it in bad vis conditions. Holy run-on sentence Batman!

They never really float on top though, they drag behind you and when you dive and drop your gun there's a big angle on your line.  When vis is crap you wind up swimming diagonally back down the line instead of vertically, 20 ft dive could turn onto 35 real quick.  Plus you have the added bonus of that extra 30 feet of friction on the kelp, sometimes you wind up fighting to puul the gun through the kelp and it decreases ur bottom time.  Not to mention the longer line is subject to surge and swell that'll yank you're marker right off the spot u left it at.  Have had that happen with my 50 footer while an diving.   Really sucks in crappy vis.  Id have to agree with nate, 30 is more than plenty, more manageable and should fit your depth range.  Get a longer one when you start diving deeper.

Good point. I was diving with a 25 footer at Ocean Cove in crappy conditions and thought I lost my floatline and Ab iron. I felt like a bigger kook than usual. I found it, but switched to a longer one after that. What I do is find it on top if I need to, look underwater at the angle of where it's going and adjust from there. Mr. agarcia is right in what he says though, this just my story.

So here is my thoughts,
I will get a 30 ft to start as I have never swam below 20 ft
In the mean time I will be looking for a 50ft for when I increase my depth capacity.
Truth be known I probably wont be going much deeper than 10 -15ft on my first few attempts anyways.
Thanks for all the great advice - I hope to enjoy this as much as kayaking.

Eric, alot of good advice from the group. My 2 cents, 25-30 ftr then longer as your experience and comfort level increases. Another tool in your dive toolbox, dont get in the habit of dropping ur iron or gun deeper than you dive because they can hang up in a  crevice. Then you have to dive down to dislodge/retrieve it. Good investment, cheaper tjan habing to replace your favoite 38 speical.
