Finally caught my first halibut this year. After three try's it felt good to finally connect. It wasn't big but still a decent keeper @ 28" that will go great on the barby.

Weather was decent even though it was a late trip. Didn't get on the water till 1 pm and off the water by 4 pm. Caught a half limit of schoolie sized blacks as well.

We fished with live anchovie's on the typical three way live bait rig with 2/0 owner mosquito hooks tied on via perfection loop. Weights varied from 4 to 6 oz but even an 8 oz would have been useful with the way the currents were running.

ps sorry about the sideways pics it was all I could do to get them on here without my wife's help. I'm retarded on these things.

That is awesome!!
Way to get out there and put in the time!  Thx for sharing your setup also. I hope to have such good fortune on my next halibut try.

Sweeeeet!

I've never caught a halibut outside of the bay. Just seems like it would be a lot more fun out on the ocean.

Redemption Otter! Did you make bait or buy it?

Redemption Otter! Did you make bait or buy it?

I bought the anchovies on K dock in berkeley and kept them alive with a battery powered aerator. I pulled and froze 3/4 of the chovies right away to give them some room but after that they lasted suprisingly well.

Between buying them at 8 am and getting to the beach at one I only had maybe 6 or 7 die on me. There were still frisky lively anchovies in the bucket at 5:30 when we packed up to go home.

I don't have a fish finder on my prowler but I didn't see any birds working or any other signs of bait on the beach.

You're right especially since I lost a nice keeper earlier after I had gaffed and on the game clip. It went so apeshit berserker style that it twisted the game clip open and slowly sunk out while I desperately tried to gaff it again.  :smt011 I felt so bad for losing it but I imagine the crabs ate well.

It is more fun outside the bay! I know they are the same fish but somehow I feel better about eating the coastal butts.

Nice catch bro. You did well keeping those chovies alive. I know very well how hard keeping them to last long enough to put in some fishing time.

Congrats on the Hali. Were you turning the camera sideways when taking the pictures or not? Maybe they would come out level if that, turning sideways, were the case. jim
