Very interesting read.  Although analysis is somewhat superficial, still provides some insight into the costs of a single angling experience.

interesting read.

that picture of this daughter is worth $1000.

If he goes fishing 10 more times with his daughter, the cost average per trip is $20.

If he had called his buddy who fishes and borrowed his gear, the price would have been $0 for gear.

I better get back to work... thx for the distraction!

I'm fishing because mostly I love to be on the water and enjoy the sport.  If I really want to eat fish, it would be cheaper for me to buy it from the Supermarket!  :smt003  Thanks for the interesting article Martin.

In law school I used to live with a sarcastic, "I-hate-life" Uncle.  He would always mock me with "Did you go to SAFEWAAAAAAAY?" whenever I'd bring fish home.  Apply thick vietnamese accent for enhanced annoyance.  Now, that refrain plays in my head every time I go fishing

Catch a rockfish in the AM bleed on the water, gutted, and iced.  Cooked that evening.  No safeway fillet will EVER come close.  After eating fresh fish, I can't even look at the safeway case.

With such a great experience, that little girl just might grow up to be an outdoors person.  Monetarily it means more park entry fees, fishing license income, environmental awareness/activism, etc.  For the father it could be a huge saving if she preferred to go out on the lake "Dad can I take the yak out" versus, "I'm going to the mall can I have the credit card."

shoot. I pay twice that much to get skunked. At the PIF event I had my rod with me and i had it in the water for 3 min tops! I had way more fun showing my daughter starfish, seals and otters!

Would it surprise you that the national survey on fishing and hunting estimates the cost per fishing trip to average right aroudn $65.  That's exactly what the author paid for himself and his daughter (each).

Not surprised, and accurate.
On my last skunk @ Capitola:
$32 gas (san ramon to Cap. Round trip)
$5.   Breakfast @ McDonald's
$10. Tackle for halibut.
$0.   Bait (made bait)

But i saved $200 by getting hydrotherapy rather than seeing a therapist to discuss life's stress.

Lol. I was in frisco about 10 years ago and I heard the same thing from this 12 year old kid. One of the ugliest things I've ever heard.

Should I be offended since I'm vietnamese?!   :smt006

+2 you ant beat truly fresh fish.

Also it's like having a connection with my inner beast- knowing I can catch my own food and I don't need to rely on anyone, it's a self sufficiency thing.  (Next time I catch a fish I'm letting out a huge man-scream/war face, Pvt. Joker Full Metal Jacket style in honor of this thread.

I can't even remember the last I bought fresh or frozen fish besides bait. On second thought.. I did have to buy a bag of frozen farm raised salmon for a dinner party a few years ago.  It was painful.

Nothing beats the feeling of catching it yourself!

Almost as good is having very cool NCKA buddies like Otobepelagic, SteveS, GreatBass2, Malolo, Aquaman, Fuzz, Freddie, and Fishunter, who, over the past several years have shared with me just about everything from albacore, yellowfin tuna, yellowtail, WSB, abs, and uni.  Thanks bros.  I don't forget!

Naw, u shd only be offended if u r my uncle lol.  I'm VN too, so me cracking VN jokes is like Angel bagging on Art for being Latino.

Of course fresh fish is better than store bought.  Although have u tried e prepared tilapia in cilantro lime marinade at Costco?  I don't even like tilapia, in fact kind of hate it.  But costcos marinated tilapia is worth the money, get it u won't b disappointed.

Honestly I wish fishing was less expensive.  I'm out like fifty three clams for state and two rod license.  Couple hundred in tackle and gear this year, like every year.  It adds up, fast.  I had better score some HVTs if I'm going to Recover my costs, once gas is figured in.  Ispose i could break even with only two or three limits of quality rockfish, if using the restaurant live fish rate of $20/lb.  I'd never make it back on trout alone lol.
