Hey Mooch, for what it would cost you for one of those 4x4 tricked out you can get the dodge rv 24' (I think) with a Mercedes diesel, 5 cylinder, 21 miles to the gallon for about $75000.
I will stick to the cheap trailers until I make my fortune on BBQ sauce. :cowboy_cool:

Cowboy.....my career as a model for speedos is not going too well these days...due to the weather  :smt011 But when the summer weather finally kicks in, my paycheck will bring in the funds that I need  :smt002 In the mean time, I'll stick to my day job  :smt003

The man-van will be mine .....anyone got $15,000 to loan me for a down payment?  :smt002 Bill?

I almost got one of those sportsmobiles or an 'adventurewagen' from ft. bragg.

The problem with the van is that the 4x4 conversion cuts into the gas tank.

They try to say that limited slip 2wd is as good as 4x4 and it's true except
for those cases where you just don't want to wait for 5 friendly mexicans
in their 1978 datsun b210 to help dig you out. which they will cause they
are the salt of the earth, but it takes a while.

the 4x4 van conversion knocks you down from 35 to 24 gallons.
not good when driving in baja or alaska etc. fine for I-5 maybe!
carrying extra fuel, even if it is diesel is always a bit sketchy.
what if you want to explore punta conoas? you might see a
barrel of gas/diesel with a hand pump at best for a few days.

Also, the resale on a camper van is not close to the resale on a good ole
pickup.

So really mostly the best choice is a whopper pickup and a small trailer or
truck-top camper (or both!). buy the trailer or camper used and just sell
when you are done.

Mooch, that toyota you have is about as good as you can get, you just need
to find a cheap tent trailer and you can spend 6 months in baja catching
fish, making it with the senoritas, not to mention the furry chicks from BC that winter
down there after spending all summer planting trees. you can wear your speedo too,
all on about $10 a day.

and they have plenty of internet cafe's for you to post pictures of your
speedo-wearing self to NCKA! next time you are between jobs, bail for baja!

Best,

J
