Anyone out there using these? I'm thinking that being able to pull the tubes off for stowing during surf manuevers is a plus. However  since I've never even seen one of these thing in real life, never mind actually using one, am looking for some NorCal feedback. The're supposedly the shiznit back East, but that's a whole 'nother world over there. Warm water, small waves, a lot higher on the food chain etc...

I'm kind of leaning towards a single ball mount aft of the paddler, and one well forward. This would be going on a Scupper Pro, and would be used almost exclusively for trolling.

Regards,
Scott

I FISH FROM A 15' PROWLER AND HAVE THREE OF THE RAM TUBES. THEY ARE JUST GREAT. TWO OF THEM ARE POSITIONED BEHIND THE SEAT. THE THIRD IS CENTERED FOWARD OF MY SEAT.THEY WORK GREAT FOR TROLLING.I FISH FLORIDA AND THE GREAT LAKES-RIVERS WITH THEM.ONE THING THAT THEY ARE ALSO USING THEM FOR IN FLORIDA IS TO MOUNT OUT-RIGGERS TO STABILIZE THE KAYAK.  HOPE THIS WILL HELP.IF YOU WANT A PICTURE OF THEM RIGGED ON MY YAK LET ME KNOW,

Thanks OHIOPROWLER.

A pic of the tube, from the "knob" side

And yep, the things seem quite sturdy. There are a lot of saltwater folks using them for outriggers over on the right coast. Most of the outrigger installs require bracing the kayak internally, as it is the flexiest (technical term) portion of the whole get-up.

I was just wondering if anyone here had given them a try.

Regards,
Scott

Not sturdy enough for a 2.5lb ball trolling for salmon.  The grip slips on the ball.  I have since replaced with 2 flush mounts.

I am thinking of mounting up front, but I'm holding off a bit.

Hey Ohio... that use of the ball mounts/Ram tubes to hold and adjust the outriggers is way cool.
Can you please post the site?

RAM stuff is pretty cool, my only gripe is that they are expensive and pretty heavy.  They are very versatile though, and the on/off is very ez.

I agree, the weight was a big factor for me.  The total weight of my RAM mounts setup was getting close to 5 lbs!!!   Price didn't help either.  I owned a ram mount style before and keeping it tight so it wouldn't slip on the ball was always a pain.  No thanks.

On my new kayak I decided on 4 flush mounts, 1 scotty, nothing for the FF, and a cheap and light GPS holder.  The Ram mounts are just one more thing you need to setup and tear down for every kayak trip.

I agree with Kevin - I'd rather go with the flush mounts.
