I guess we should expect nothing less from the whiz : )

If you're stockpiling the goods and want serious gear you owe it to yourself to visit a shop that caters to freediving.  Freedive shop in sac, bodega bay prodive (now under new ownership). Locally wallins in san carlos was good but mooch said they're slippin and I hear glens aquarius in monterrey is decent.

Alot of the shops cater to scuba and aren't the most knowledgeable or well stocked so when you're shopping your really not gonna get a good picture of what's out there.  That's how people end up with soft weight belts and pneumatic guns instead of streamlined lead and band guns ;)

True. Thats how i ended up with a soft weight belt and soft weights as a christmas gift. I was able to return the actual soft weights ($$$) and got some free dive fins instead. Andy gave me some of the lead squares, that i now use in the pockets of the soft weight belt. Its not perfect, creats some drag, but for now its what i got.

Vannessa at Freedive hooked me up with YazBeck Freedive Suit in May; but havent had a chance to go back there to finish gearing up.

So the soft wieghts are not good? Should I get the belt and those lead "buckle looking things" instead? Maybe I'll make a run to Vanessa's again before work....

Soft lead is comfy when your loaded down with scuba gear and are working your way along the bottom for long periods of time.  We're in constant up down mode, crawling in and around in shallow with alot of surge.  The belts will shift and flop around causing you to shift and flop around.  Everyone I know who's had one has sold them.  You want a rubber belt, i like marsaille (sp), they have a stainless wire buckle.  I wouldn't say its mandatory to visit the shop before this coming weekend, you can probably rent a weightbelt from glens.....but if you do go have her show u a few euro guns.

Thanks! Just got done returning those beanie bags and will look into getting the rubber belt; but got another question:

For 22lbs of weights (quit trying to calculate my real weight), what is the best combination to get?
a.) 4 - 5lbers and 2 - 2lbers
b.) 4 - 4lbers and 2 - 3lbers
c.) 5 - 4lbers and 1 - 1lber

What other accessories/equipment should I pick up, (ie: knife, etc)?

And again, thanks for helping out us FNGs!!!!

Vis is generally pretty good unless there's a plankton bloom. The kelp is very thick out there right now, so it's kind of dark under the canopy. Saturday in Pacific Grove, reports said a hazy 10 feet with plankton.

Still on, if the vis isn't good we'll drive around and scout a couple different spots.

I used to use a combo of 5, 3 and 2lb weights, the best combo is all 2 lb'ers.  They're small, protrude less which helps in the kelp and they conform around your waistline....helpful for those of us with variable levels of muffin top.

Just got done paying FreeDiveShop's rent for the month! Got up and decided to make a run to Sac before work and picking up some much needed dive gear; now I can cross off these from my list:

- Banks Dive Board
- Sumora Belt (Rubber w/ SS Buckle)
- Billy D Ring (2)
- Rob Allen Railgun 70cm
- Millennium Omer Fins and Sock

* They ran out of bullet weights; so I'm waiting on them to come in today.

I still need some float line; I remember there was a NCKA member who made some for Jedmo, but I can' remember who it was.

I doubt I can make this one, but Porky is stopping by my house on his way down...

If anybody wants to try out an ab biller 32 (rigged with a 5 prong trident tip of death and a 33 foot float line) let me know and I can send it down there with him for you guys to use...

To be honest, if it is your first time diving, you should probably just focus on getting comfy in the water, diving up and down, relaxing in kelp and looking under rocks and in holes and trying to find the fishies...but if you want to try the gun out you are welcome to borrow it!

If I can make it, I'll be there, but I highly doubt it....

Sincerely,

Jim

ps...Glen, If you don't got a float line by Saturday I can send one of my other ones down with Porky for you...you don't want to drop that nice, new gun and lose it on your first time out!!  :smt002

Thanks Jim! I might take you up on that; I read the donation post and don't want to do my first dive post on it.. :smt044 :smt044

Thanks Porky! Just talked to Jedmo, got his name and sent him a PM...

Saturday for me is also 50/50, but I am getting ready as if it were a go; luck-as-falls, hope it does my way.... if not, I test them out at Albion...
