I'm not sure about any actual spearfishing classes, but for free diving in general, there is PFI and FI/FII courses, but you'll have to find out when one is in the area. I've never taken one, but they teach you the basics and tremendously improve your skills.

For abalone, I saw something about Bamboo Reef Dive shop in Rohnert Park offering a class, but I think the tuition was around 80 bucks.

What I would recommend is just going out for a dive with some of your NCKA brothers. It's free of cost, and you'll have a great time with the camaraderie. There's tons of great places for newbies to dive for abs/fish, whether it's the Monterey area, or up north in Sonoma or Mendo County. A lot of fish and abs can be had in 8-15 feet of water.

I Took a freedive class at Wallins in San Carlos about 5 years ago ind I learned allot and I know they still have them, it is well worth it. On a side note if you teach me how to catch halibut off of my yak I will help you get started and show you what little bit I know.

We should do a newbie dive day in monte/carmel so anyone who wants to get their feet wet can do so in good vis with some minor coaching before driving 3+ hours to get freaked out in the murk.

July 16th, I'll be taking my daughter to snorkel in monterrey (coral street).  Anyone who wants to go is welcome to come but we will be diving shallow and likely see mostly perch and senoritas.  Rick pretty much summed it all up for gear, start reading/practicing on clearing your ears and you can rent gear at glens aquarius at teh cg boat ramp.  I'm gonna ask that you do not start studying advanced freediving techniques or breathing patterns, holding your breath and getting used to manuevering under water is good enough for day one.  Kayaks are not mandatory but they, or a dive board are helpful......bring food, maybe we can bbq and do a hali dive at mbk afterwards.
