I've been going back and forth between using the perfection loop knot versus a clinch knot on the live bait hook for halibut fishing.  On 2 occasions over the last 2 years I have had strong takedowns while live-bait drifting with shiners in SF Bay where the fish hit hard, was on for 5-10 seconds, and then the line sliced within the perfection loop.  The break did not occur at the knot but within the loop.  I'm assuming that the line sliced on a tooth or other sharp spot on the jaw.  Also possible that maybe these were sharks and not butts.  I have not ever had these issues using the clinch knot and have not lost a butt or other fish while using this knot. I tried the ringed live bait hook once but did not hook-up.

Anybody else have this experience with perfection loop knots and butts?

John
I used to have the same issue with line test below 20lb almost seems like the hook cuts right through the loop.
I now use a Uniknot and don't cinch it down all the way or a Surgeon's end loop

John, I too last year at ARW, once at the derby, and another the time after, had  super nice takedown and had the fish on 5-10secs but the my hooks popped or ripped out! They wren't cut, but just came out. Couldve been sharks, but i too was trolling live shiners. Both times it happened while using braided line with a 20lb. flouro topshot connected to a 3way rig setup for trolling a dodger and shiner. I use a 2hook tandem rig. both hooks being octopus. One thru the mouth and the other thru the tail. This rigg works great for me and I havn't had a bite thru yet. I think i lost my fish because my drag may have been set a lil too tight and for using a no stretch line which i DO NOT use anymore for hali's..The perfection loop or those ring-hooks will get your bait to move more freely, and inreturn get u more bites, but using a single hook increases your chances of having a deep hookset and thus risk having a break off. Dont get me wrong, I too still use 1 single hook at times when drifting live bait for hali's, but have had more luck using the double tandem rig. The rig is the same we used for WSB in monterey, its just set shorter apart from hook to hook depending on the size bait your using. Both of the hali's i got last year where deep hook in the gut but i got lucky it didnt bite thru. The good thing about this hook rig is that if one hook is bitten off, the other might just get hooked too! Oh, and i use the clinch knot on everything.

Could have been sharks.  It happened once with 20# flouro and once with 30# flouro using a #1 Gami light wire live bait hook.  Was just wondering if having the 2 strands of the loop near the teeth on a hook-up might increase the odds of slicing the line.  Thanks for the feedback guys.

If they bit through 30# its probably a shark. Halibut can bite through 20# pretty easily. I've seen it happen at boatside before. Since then I've switched to 30 and 40# for leaders and haven't had a problem.

I don't think they are line shy either. More of a reaction ambush kind of feeder.

Try doubling the line when you tie the knot.

Nice tip Tote, thanks!
I just learned to tie the perfection loop and was looking forward to trying it on smaller baits instead of a ringed hook.
