as for a knife....fixed blade is better (IMHO) and you WILL loose it. So I tend to not spend a ton. I use this one. I get the pointed tip one (i like the built in line cutter notch) and then grind off the point so I don't stab myself if I have to use it in an emergency. The case has a clip thingy so you can attach it to a web loop on your PFD.

A radio on the other hand. don't go cheap. You will use hopefully just for chatting but in case you REALLY need it. Make sure it works. I did the cheapo cobra model and it failed when it got a splash of water on it. I now use standard horizon. I'd expect to pay at least $75 for one. But in reality 100-150 is a safer range. Consider it the money you saved on the knife spent in a better place

seems like the cheaper the knife the longer you'll have it. i lost several nice "kayak" type knives until I bought a $12 cheapie dive knife maybe 10 years ago. Still have the cheapie on my PFD. You can use zip ties or whatever to secure the sheath to the PFD, in case you get one that does not have a clip thingy.
EWB is right on with the radio advice. I've got a Standard Horizon (I think). It has worked great through 3 seasons.

Radio : I use a "Uniden Voyager" because of the small form factor. However, they don't waterproof well. The first one I got died after being submerged for 5 seconds. The current one doesn't look like it has very good seal either. I'm only using it because it is small and can fit in my PDF pocket. Come to think of it, I don't think any of the radios have a very good seal. I put it in a sandwich bag if I do beach launch.

Knife : I use a "Wenoka Squeeze titanium". It looks good. Relatively sharp. Fits on my PDF well. Doesn't rust. I don't use it for normal cutting stuff. It is purely for emergency.

Was turned onto an ICOM M-34. West Marine carries it and it does float. Anybody else know of this radio?  Thanks

I've been using my ICOM for a couple of years now, no problems.  I have mine attached and teathered on my left lapel (LIFE JACKET LAPEL) so if I want to talk it's right there for one handed ops.

I've been using the Wenoka "Squeeze" Lock Titanium Knife, Stiletto Tip to this day  :smt045 (light, easy to secure to PFD, quick release and will never rust on you)

Those small Wenokas mount nicely ro a NRS chinook. Their mounts are spaced the same as the drain holes of the big pocket.

Go to ebay and search dive knife there are a tone buy it nows for under $10.00  with shipping it comes up to about 14 or so pick the style and color you want.  I agree with above ziptie it to your vest and it will stay put.  If you attach a small pice of bungee to the handle and attach that to your vest you will also keep the knife.

Love the Wenoka :smt007 has better attachment choices & secure stealth than Gerber River Runner.   I got it at Dolphin in Sac for less than $30 (thanks to Abdiver-Erik :smt002), but mine is not Ti.

It floats but not enough to find it when you drop in the ocean...
also, a few problems to think about...

Thanks for all the replys. I have the Wenoka in route and it looks like I am leaning toward the ICOM M-34. It sounds like an ARMY Rifle, but it is a radio.

I like the scuba leg knife. It's out of the way yet handy for emergency and they are cheap on e-bay. That and a shorty survival knife on vest.

I use duct tape to seal battery compartment on my standard horizon 350, improves the situation anyway.

I personally use a Wenoka squeeze titanium knife and I love the quick release feature. Also, I went to Big5 today and saw a lot of knives on sale. I picked some of these up. For some reason, I am always loosing my knives (sometimes accidentally dropping them in the water) They were on sale for $6 each plus a 30% off in addition. It is a neck knife and the knife partially locks on to its sheath.
