Hey All,

Just started fishing not to long ago and looking for a decent rod and reel for Halibut and Striper.
I do not know anything about them, any ideas or links on a decent set up that is not to expensive?
Thanks for your help.
Steve

Hey Steve,

For me, there's so many options these days that it's hard to give too much advice without a little more info. Do ya like spinning or baitcasters? If money is an issue how many different situations do ya fish/want to fish? Plugging for striper comes in a variety of packages. Where do ya expect to be fishing the most? I suppose the best advice I can give is: Hookup with one of us. I'd be more than willing to let ya throw my stuff to get a feel for spinning versus baitcasters and for different sizes, not that I have much. I'm sure others will/would do same.
Cabelas or basspro will give ya something to look at, but you're probably going to want to touch the stuff before ya buy it.

Unless one of the good guys in the NCKA can hook you up with a deal just go to Walmart. Best not to spend the big bucks until you really commit to the sport.

for the money, if you want new the ugly stik tiger rods are hard to beat. Penn reels are good if you are fishing mono. A good medium heavy spinning rod can work great too.

I agree, don't go expensive at first, the gear will just get beat up. Go with cheap & easy to maintain as parameters.

I personally prefer rods of 6.5-7ft, long enough so that I can reach forward and get the line around the bow if necessary. Fish always seem to want to run around the bow...

Last I heard, "free" was as cheap as it gets :smt001 Plus, bonus, Steve could probably try out a spinning and a baitcaster. God, is he gonna have to sign a contract with the devil for that deal? :smt002 What an awsome offer.

Nice offer Darius.  If you really get into fishing you'll want to buy quality gear.  If you truly love what you do, you'll spend money regardless of the sport or passion.
