I took a hard hit from underneath off Trinidad about 3 years ago, it left a big swirl in the water, I was looking to the right, he jumped in from the left and landed on my legs, broke my fish finder mount and plopped back into the water.  Was just a pup, but I still nearly shat myself!

I have had sea lyons around and they have come up behind me, but usually they breath loud enough for you to know that it is a mammal.  I've not had one bump the bottom unannounced.  I think my heart would stop and my pants would be filled.   You have really told some funny stories.  I love reading about your experiences.

Exactly!

I only told this story to a few who were there at the time.  Bean Hollow, last year, the day before Adam got hit...  I was paddling out to the group, alone, and had just cleared the breakers and stopped to tie on a jig, when I froze because there was a sound behind me, and when I looked back all I saw was a huge swirl immediately off my bow...  that looked as if it were caused by something very large.  I tensed up, trying to look evert place at once, hoping for the mammal breath, or barking, but instead there was silence, and I could see a large, undefined shape torpedo back towards me and along side the yak...  I almost packed it in and headed straight to shore, but willed myself to paddle out to the boys, where it was noted that:  A) I can paddle pretty fast on that Drifter, and B) I was fishing a little closer to the group than usual.

I think it was a stellar sea lion up from Ano Nuevo, but at the time I was fully expecting to see fin.

Never did hear it breath or bark...

I can't say that I have ever been attacked/boarded but they seem to like to set up a perimeter around me when they are around, 3 or 4 of them surrounding me. Just that gets my heart beating... I can't help but wonder what they are plotting when they do that!! I think I would piss all over myself too if one of those ever tried to make any contact whatsoever with me or my yak.

Am I the only one here that jumps out of his boat to harass the seals and otters? I can't stand those little furbags. They tear up my crab traps and have run off with several good lures.

Yes you are.  I'm sure you're only thinking about it.  Because under the Marine Mammal Protection Act that would be illegal.

None of our genteel members would ever do anything illegal.  Particularly since our enviro friends cruise this and the other boards as 'guests' on a regular basis.

A few years ago I was paddling west out of Avila and ran into a good sized male sea lion (300 - 400 lbs) going south we were about 10 yards apart. It was an overcast day and there was nothing else around. I was using the "show no fear approach" and slapped the water with my paddle. This had worded well in the past to scare off smaller sea lions. He objected, barking loudly he suddenly dove under water. I looked around nervously to see where he was. Suddenly  an enormous bubble surfuced from under my yak. Scared the sh*t out of me. He surfaced about ten yards away, but I was already paddling as hard as I could. He watched me a while and then continured on his way. I've talked to others this has happened to, and now I don't mess with the big males and avoid them whenever they are around.

First time I saw 40+ foot visibility water in Carmel was amazing!  You could actually see the fish and try and move your lure to the bigger ones  :smt044  While I was staring down into the deep something huge moved under me, looked like a large white ball.  My heart skipped a beat as I watched not knowing what it was and then it unfolded itself into a white sea lion (harbor seal?) looking directly up at me.   :smt044  Was pretty relieved to see what it was though  :smt005

I was fishing with Zeelander out of MBK a few years ago and got buzzed twice by a juvenile Humpback. I was in about 45 feet of water in a channel between the kelp beds and suddenly the sonar depth jumped to 5 feet and then back to 45 then the side sonar picked up a big fish. That repeated again as if it swam around in a circle and back under me. Zee was behind me and saw it surface—I never saw it and until he told me I thought a GWS was stalking me. I think he really enjoyed the look of panic on my face and so waited a bit. I figure that, since they are sonar using animals, it was intrigued by my sonar clicks and was going under me to try and figure out what kind of whale I was. i was relieved it was a whale.

I once paddled next to a huge group of sea lions on the cement ship in Aptos.  Out of the 100 sea lions that were there just one followed me huffing and puffing the whole time.  He never touched my kayak but he kept splashing me and got me soaked.  He was a huge guy too so it was kinda freaky.

p.s.  nice otter pics Mooch!
