Monday morning I picked around in the rocks with my son Collin, Domenic, Don and his son Kuba, and Etienne.  Everyone found some abs, and we found enough legal ones for people to take some home to eat.  Got the family packed up and on the road, did more cleaning up and packing, saw Darius bring in his trophy to the launch, then headed out on the water with Domenic for a few hours.  I trolled chovie behind my flasher and DeepSix almost the entire time and brought in 8 blacks (6 nice ones including a bomber 20"), and a limit of lings including a 33" hitchhiker - all on the salmon trolling gear!!!  That evening was quiet as most had gone home and I had my room to myself.  I got my first good night's sleep in days and got up to finish cleaning and packing today.  What a blast!  I can't wait to do some work on plans to make next year better.   :smt001

Here's the raw video footage of the awards ceremony.  I missed a few of the guys that placed.  Thought it was recording.  I have another footage of the potluck and closed captions of a few yakkers but I have to do some editing on that one when I get back home.

Eric - The amount of energy you poured into this event was amazing.  A great time had by all.  Thank you very much.  This event is a permanent fixture on my calendar.

Thanks to the NCKA family for welcoming my buddy NovatoDave to the event.  He's hooked and can't say enough about how great everyone was.

Salmon trolling was the most productive for me.  This is my personal best ling taken on a watermelon apex on a diver.  Thought for sure it was a salmon but when the diver surfaced and no color I wondered what I had.  Then the head showed up and it was gaff time.

Great Job AbKing!!!

Epic Event...  Great To see so many, sorry not to make it over to camp, knew it was danger with an important task of getting one of my youngest out on the water, Rockfishing for the first time, in possible in claimate weather...

and it was, Kuba did such a great job and I'm really proud of him for getting out there with me Sunday...

I asked him later if he thought something was wrong when we were going out on the water, when people were coming back in...?

He said he thought something might be up, but he also knew how much work I had put into getting us out there.....   :smt010

We made it to the front of the Hotel, wind, slight cross swell coming out of the cove, and then cold....  I had him dressed well, but I saw guys in drysuits throwing in the towel...
10 to 15 min of fishing....  :cold

Time to get him back in while the getting is good...

Get him back to the hotel, get a bath going, he's happy...

Back to fishing!!!...  Finally, Late start, But I'm going!!!  It was great... bout 2 1/2 hour of good action,,,
lots of little lings, couple keepers, kept one, Cabbies and Blacks oh My!!!  I had no plan of getting back for the 2pm weigh in and was just going to fish...  noticing I'm the last out here now...

Here comes the wind, rain, and power... it got snotty quick and it was " Pretty Kool..." sloshing thru that rough stuff with the Outback... Good Times..."

Got to try Abing for the first time with Kuba under the lead of the Abking Himself... with his son in tow... Got up early and poked around... Kuba did great and even twisted up his foot slipping on rocks, and stuck it out again anyway...  we came away with 2....

Great times and wish I was still there... was just starting to slow down....

Funny, we left today about 12:00....

Warming up and the Ocean turned to a lake.....   :smt004

 Figures...

Think I'll head back.... Rockfish, Halibut and Salmon oh My!!!

 Truly Epic Fishing Possibilities....

and Always Epic NCKA....

  Strong Work AbKing!!!        :smt006

The H.O crew! we took out the A-hulls! yee! T-shirts and emblems in the making!

Stop the presses dude! Check the stats. :smt044

9th. place: A-HULLS
Total score: 306.25 divided by 7=
                  43.75 Team Score
(AlsHobie,Sara, BigJim, FM1, Cochino, Lapu-Lapu, SinCoast, dpshim, LingKing

I think Dan scored 735 and Ryan got ~500. So ~1541/5 including my 0 = 308 ?    I was too damn cold to take pics of my fish but got 6 lings, a handful of rockies, a barely legal cab, and a buffalo sculpin...kept 1 ling. Yeah weaksauce. But I don't like being hypothermic. Almost rather eat balut in the sun. Almost. So I went home and took a shower instead. Sleepytime ensued....D'OH!   :smt015

Stop the presses, CHECK THE RULES:
The scorecard sign-up were to be completed by Sat. night.
dpshim and lingKing were not signed up on the card.(I have proof)
Also, If an angler did not fish or check in fish, they received a 0 score and could not be scratched from the card before the calculations.
Nice try Pat, next year make sure you sign up everyone on the team and only those that are going to fish and check in fish. :smt002

Eric thanks for putting on another epic event.  Your hardwork in organizing and hosting GS5 are greatly appreciated.

Ravensblack congratulations on winning SOTD.  I also want to thank you for showing me how to process a halibut.  Give me a call when the ocean and wind lay down and we will hit the ranch with my brother.

It was cold and rainy when I headed out to the red can.  I started with a 4 oz diamond jig and caught several small rockfish before I hooked into something big.  After several runs and minutes I finally get it to the surface and it is a monster ling.  I grab my gaff and as I set to gaff the monster it looks me in the eye and shakes her head no, no, no not today Terry and spits the hook and down she goes taking my spirits with her.

A few minutes later I hook into another ling and this time I just land it by hand and put it on my clip.  Species #1 down.

After another half hour passes and several more small rockfish I change over to a BIG HAMMER SWIMBAIT on a 4oz jig head.  It doesn"t take long before it gets hammered and the battle begins.  After several runs in 15 minutes I finally get my first glimpse of the beast, a big butt.  The big butt looks at me and my kayak and doesn't like what it sees and goes straight back to the bottom.  Five minutes later I get it back up to my yak and this time it sees my gaff and once again straight back to the bottom it went.  Another 5 minutes passes before I get the big butt back to the surface and this time the big butt looks tired and allows me to set my gaff and put it on my clip.  Species #2 down.

After losing my only BIG HAMMER SWIMBAIT  I change back to the diamond jig.  Note to self need to bring more BIG HAMMER SWIMBAITS next time.  It doesn't take long before I land a decent vermilion.  Species #3 down.

A short time later I land a cabby.  Species #4 down.

Now I start targeting greenlings and it doesn't take long before I land one.  Species #5 down.

The wind picks up and I decide to head back in and try for a perch.  I modify my gear and shortly after I land a perch.  Species # 6 down.

Once again thank you Eric for all of your hardwork.

Terry, you showed us all the potential that Shelter Cove really has. That halibut is the coolest thing I have seen yet kayak fishing. If anyone has OTW pics of any Big Hammer swimbaits please send them to me. I am compiling an article to send Big Hammer about GS5. I will try to up their sponsorship for our events. Craig
