Hey everyone,
I'm planning to get an early start and launch from SC harbor either Saturday or Sunday. Saturday is supposed to be warmer, but windier, Sunday is supposed to be cooler, and less windy. I'm open to either day, but maybe someone with more local knowledge would be better at interpreting this weather. I feel safe in some pretty adverse conditions in my kayak, but it sure makes for tough fishing...

My plan is to head for deeper (50-60+) water early and try to get some rockfish, then retreat inside and search for halibut. I bought some gear to try bounce-balling ("00" dodger, etc), so I might drag a hoochie or some squid for a while.

So who's interested?

~Alex

Hi Alex,

I'll be heading out of Capitola on Saturday and possibly Sunday and usually don't venture out past Pleasure Point so we probably won't cross paths, but just looked at Underground Weather and saw just the opposite. Saturday looks to be warmer and less wind, but then again that could change or this site could be wrong.

I'm not real big into rockfish and typically target halibut so my method may be different, but when I have targeted rockfish and halibut in the same day I like to troll for halibut first to be able to keep 2 rods in the water. If you keep a rockfish, you'll be limited to 1 rod.

Good luck,
Dean

I only fish one rod at a time, and you're allowed to have as many with you as you want, so I don't see that being an issue.

NOAA and Weather Underground don't agree on this weekend. That's why I'm still unsure.

I'll think about the pleasure pt area. Might be worth a shot.

I was about to head to ARW but the forecast is getting worse.  The wife's doing a wine tour in SC (I didn't know there was such a thing lol) and I might hitch a ride.  How's the parking situation at the harbor (pay, free)?

Not sure on the parking. It'll be my first launch from the harbor.

Hai, not sure about the parking. Only seen permit or fee parking when I've gone over to eat or get crabs. Maybe pm scallen for local knowledge, I know he regularly launches from there and this morning on his fishing report said he might be heading out this weekend.

As far as wine tasting in SC, where ever my wife and her friends get together there's wine tasting.

lol... we'll have a beer tasting tour on the h20.

Are you planning on launching from capitola?  It might be easier for her to drop me off instead.  The last time that happened, she picked me up from fitness 5 hours later. :smt009  I plan on starting around 10 and she can pick me up the next day if she wants.

Yes, I walk it down the pier and launch off of their ramp avoiding the surf launch/landing. I'll probably be heading out around 6:00 and try flylining New Brighton in hopes of a striper and then troll for halibut. Usually get blown off the water around 1:00-2:00.

Sorry about the thread jack.

If you launch from the harbor, and you arrive early enough, you can probably score free on-street parking near Aldo's. The parking is usually packed by about 9:30-10am when folks are heading to breakfast.
You can also get a day parking pass for I think $5 at the Harbor patrol lighthouse on the other side of the harbor.

I'd join you but I'm doing a 1/2 day on Velocity Sunday w/ my father in law.

Alex, you can also checkout this link:

http://www.beachlive.com/beach-weather-cams/beach/the-harbor_24685

They don't have a web cam at the harbor, but it gives the current wind. You can select other nearby locations using the "Nearest Beach Cam" and some have web cams setup.

Daniel too bad you couldn't make it out this weekend, but I understand work comes first. Keep me posted on the salmon in Monterey, because I might be fishing for other species but a salmon is number one on the list of "must catch".

Yeah, I feel 100% agree with ya on the salmon! :D Coincidentally, Hai and I were discussing about hooking up for another run at the salmon. If you both are out there tomorrow, please keep me posted on a salmon hookup as well :D

Careful out there! Wind looks to be a big factor this weekend.  I went out on Wed evening, thinking it would be fine.  But further I went, the wind, swell, and chop got worse.  Ended up dodging sailboats too, which wasn't very fun.

I might join you guys, I think the area will be more protected from the wind, at least early in the morning-who ever knows except mother nature. I'll probably opt for capitola, but a slight chance of launching from the harbor. Channel 69 and good luck.

Nice seeing you out there Solsrf1. Did you pick up any more after we parted? I got another short ling on the drift in... story of my day... I might be out there again this weekend, or I might hit ARW (much closer). Seems like the halibut have showed up in the bay.
