Hey i'm going up to sea ranch this weekend, my parents rented a place up there, and Im taking my kayaks.

Can any one point me in the right direction,  for me and my brother and I to find some abs in sea ranch, rather than driving 30 minutes south to stillwater cove/ salt point timber cover ect?

Just the general area, IE end of which streets ect. Last year we went diving, with out kayaks at the end of one street, and did not see any in 45 minutes of diving before heading south.

Thank you in advance,

-Garet

PS will post a report + pictures if we get some in sea ranch :)

Sea Ranch is awsome... I've found abs in pretty much every cove I've dove there... pretty much ANY of the hike-to coves from the cul de sac lots... I'm not talking about the lots that they let the unwashed masses in... the parking areas that are for Sea Ranch occupants only... make sure you have the right parking tag or they will ticket & tow really quickly... just find any place to hike/climb down the cliffs and it should be pretty good.

Never dove their, but I've heard stories about property owners being strict about trespassing. Make sure you stay on the marked trails just to be safe.

You should invite everyone you know and dive that place en masse.
That'll make them think twice about not choosing 2XA.

The folks at sea ranch wanted 2XA to pass. They had an attorney representing them at the meting in Santa Rosa indicating that they would give up Sea Ranch coastline to kep the northern end of Salt Point open. The homeowners there did not want the extra pressure to come to their property from divers that could no longer dive the fisk mill/ horesehoe area. Asshole Jack Likens sold out Salt Point. I also believe the glorious CSP's gave the thumbs up to the closure as well. Then the enviros had a win win. Sae Ranch was already private property. Arch's property was already private. So the NRDC. OC and all the other doomsayers got everything they wanted and more. I suport diving the shit out of Sea Ranch but you cant blame the homeowners there for the State Park closure. GD it! Go for it man. I hope you find some killer abalone while you are there.

I think the best place to launch a yak would be at Shell Beach, the street comes pretty close to the beach, and then there's a decent path to get the yaks to the protected launch,  I've never done it but I did a research trip with the GF and lunch, on that day there were 2 yakkers coming in, one had a 10, the rest of the limits were all 9 plus,

I've dove Shell a million times with my kayak.  It is .2 miles to the beach (shortest walk of all the trails) with a very easy trial if you have wheels.  The staircase to the beach is a little bit if a bitch but other than that it is easy.  Go north or south 1/4 mile or so and you will find nice big abs.  Fish can be spotty but when you find them they are usually thick.  Like big schools of 50 or more blacks, etc.  Have fun, be safe.

Paddle south from shell beach to a round cove surrounded by cliff. it is called black point i believe. Dive in that cove and feel the love.

Their rules only allow 4 divers per house. Also no wetsuits drying where people can see it. No changing in or out of wetsuits in public. That didn't stop the yuppies changing out of their spandex when they got to the beach.

Their rules are pretty weird...isn't there one that says no blinds or curtains on windows?
Overall, Sea Ranch isn't a place for non-residents. If you don't have a SR pass, you're stuck using the public access points which...well...suck. One has a 50' vertical staircase and a bad beach break, another has a collapsed trail and is therefore out of commission, and the rest have long trails and/or steep stairs.
Oh, and did I mention there are only 20 or so parking spaces total?
May the fish be mighty and the seas be meek...

Well We went last weekend. the weather was down right crummy. 5-6 foot swell 10-25 mph wind, 4 feet of vis.  I still went diving any ways, in a protected cove my brother/father found off of breaker beach drive

I did manage 2 limits over 2 days. The biggest ab was  a 9 incher, and the rest 8s :smt001. But I did not really care for the location.

The abs I pulled were the shallowest abs I have ever seen 6-10 ish feet, but it required alot of digging through kelp to find any crevaces. What really bugged me was beyond 12 feet everythign was sand/gravel. I had 0 need to dolphin kick on the way down, the few times i did i just about planted my mask in the rocks  :smt011 .

Even at more popular public dive spots Im used to be able to dive a little deeper down and seeing 2-5 abs per dive. At the cove off breaker beach in 4 hours of diving over 2 days i saw maybe 15 abs.

Also so I was going to Post a jpeg of the parking permit but my camera died.  :smt010 I see what every one means by F@ck sea ranch, there guards are pricks, who have nothing better to do than run ab divers off. I must have had my permit checked 3 times while unpacking the car.
