With beautiful weather and low swells throughout the week, we headed out saturday to do some freediving.  We were looking forward to flat calm waters... not to be.  Freezing water, constant wind, & surface chop made things a lot more challenging than expected.   :smt009

Launched a little south of Lover's pt. & paddled out.  Viz was actually decent, though the fish didn't seem to be around.  The larger fish were nowhere to be seen & the smaller fish milling around weren't very active.  I also managed to flip my kayak with both hatches open & spent some time recovering my things from the ocean floor.   :smt011

By moving around & hustling, we ended up shooting a few good fish.  A collection of nice rockfish came up & some nice lingcod were seen(but left unscathed).  As always, it was good just to get out & be in the water.   :smt001

A couple pics from my catch (please ignore my ghetto duct tape kayak repairs):

Hey, you didn't mention the flipping.  I wouldn't have either  :smt003

Dude, check out the duct tape.  That is some serious A-Team stuff.  Is that going to last until 07'?

Tied a new lanyard on the left side of my kayak that day.  Forgot about it & jumped off the right side with my speargun...  clipped to the lanyard.   :smt005

Posts and pics like this report makes me want to freedive...  Then I read a report like the Ft. Ross GWS drive-by and I lose all interest again...  Great pics and report.

How deep were you going?

Sad to be surfacebound by allergies right now.  Though I don't envy snorkeling in the chop much.
*clears ears* Hey they're working better than they have in 6 weeks.  Maybe I'll be good to go soon.  Thanks rain and claritin D.   :smt005

Great pics.  I was just thinking how cool it would be to see some underwater pics on this site.  Nice job. I guess when Joel dives he will probably take a camera instead of a spear.

Jason, funny you mentioned that....I was actually looking into gettting an underwater digital camera. I figured I'd take the free diving class and get the underwater camera first instead of getting a gun. I figured I can tag a long with the spearos on this board and maybe pick-up some tips while I'm taking underwater photos  :smt002

Anyone know much about underwater digi cameras? I saw this one.....

FYI: I moved this question to the spearfishing forum

Joel that is great Idea. Now you can take a picture of the GW as it approaches you. JK, I have been contemplating the underwater world myself.  Let me know how it goes?

When I was growing up in the Philippine Islands, I used to skin dive with my cousin in the Province of Mindanao - known for the famous Philippine Deep
Quote
The lowest spot in the world is the "Philippine Deep", situated off the Pacific coast of the archipelago. It is 37,782 feet deep, or 2,142 feet lower than the "Marianas Deep". Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the world, can easily be submerged in the "Philippine Deep", with 8,754 feet of space to spare.

We used to skin dive with only a mask and snorkle and no fins (fins were hard to come by) The water was piss warm and we would spend HOURS in the shallow reefs chasing fish around = I MISS THAT. I guess this why I'm looking forward to "going under" again. But this time, I have to worry about the COLD water and of course, the Land Lord  :smt011
