Well, after that wollop my wife got at home from last weeks storm, she called me with information about 3 trees (Tan oaks)that apparently couldn't handle the weather.  Fortunatly, they fell in our yard and caused no damage other that leaving a gaping hole where the root ball for one tree that was acutally 2.  I'll have to shore up and fill the hole as it's real close to where I park my Jeep.
She wasn't home or didn't hear them go, as our neighbor asked her about them on a walk they did after the fact.  Wife had no idea they came down.  (Which was good for me, she would have freaked out something bad had she been home to hear them come down!)
Just more firewood for the pile now!

I had PG&E drop a big diseased tan oak & a huge undercut fir tree in October, and I'm sure glad now. The fir would have come down on the 3/24 storm I'm pretty certain.
Only casualty for us was a small redwood in the front yard. It is still alive, but the top is touching the ground now.

On a related note any chainsaw recommendations? I'm "in the market" as my 6yr old Poulan is on its last legs. I've messed with it for the last couple of years but now it refuses to idle & stalls too often for me. Time for an UPGRADE (so i can buck up the PG&E trees mentioned above).
I'm looking for a small saw, 14" probably but would consider something a little bigger too.

How did you persuade PGE to do so?  I have a streetside tree that I want trimmed way back, its encroaching into the airspace above my house (=nuisance).  Its not a threat to powerlines.  I want to have some entity with an aerial lift come by and take care of it, and I'd rather not have to pay $$ to accomplish that.

We get periodic visits from PG&E since we are on a utility easement, so they come by once a year or so & suggest trees to take down.
Both of our trees were marked because of their proximity to neighborhood lines. We didn't want to lose the oak initially so we had two different arborists out to look at it & they both said "it's sick & dying" so it ended up being an easier choice. The fir was just a hazard at its age.
Anyway, PG&E sent Davey Tree out to drop them without any hassle due to the danger the trees posed to the power lines.
If your tree isn't a direct threat to the power lines, II doubt they would cut it for free.

Husqavarna chainsaw are good, my little on (16-18") seems to be just enough for the trees around my yard.  I guess the 2 popular branda are Sthil and Husk'ys.  Another option is to take your saw to a small motor repair shop have them tune it up.  There is a place in Soquel I belive, (Can't recall the name at the moment but there very close to circuit city / Toy-R-Us)  that can probably go through it.  I've used them to tune up an old (Costco bought) yard chipper/shreader a friend gave me.  It needed a new carbuator, and I had them install fuel shut off.
The tune up may be cheaper than a new saw, if that Pulan has ben working for you.

yeah, B&B small engine repair-they have an excellent rep according to my honda mechanic. I've certainly gotten my $100 out of the Poulan, but I think I am ready for something a bit more...better :smt003 Still thinking it over though. This weekend I'll be using a new clean filter & new gas, then re setting the carb, so maybe I'll get one more summer out of the green thing.
