I installed Scotty flush mount holders on my Revo.  As I sat in my kayak dreaming about fishing, I put my triple rod mount on.  I positioned it to run along side the edge of the kayak.  I thought that it would be a good place to put a downrigger.

But, do I need to reinforce the back of the mounts inside of the kayak?  I know some people have done this.  Has anyone ever had their kayak mounts torn out from the stress of too much weight?

I was going to go with the flush mount for my Revo downrigger until Ben (Bassmanben) told me that he uses the gunwall mount for the Scotty Laketroller and just tightens the clamp up inside one of the Revo's carry handles.  I am going to try it out at Berryessa Saturday.  I am going to leash it and tighten the crap out of it.  Those handles are thick and don't have very much flex in them.---Jeff

If my vote counts I do not think I would trust having the downrigger on the tree, to must flex going on there  :smt009 just my thought.

Personally, I'd stay away from putting the DR on the triple mount for the same reason Pat R. mentioned, too much flex going on.  If you absolutely must use the triple mount, put your DR in the slot directly above the flushmount and put your rod holders on either side of it.

I have my DR straight into a Scotty flush mount and it works like a charm but I have other rod holders on the yak.

But, do I need to reinforce the back of the mounts inside of the kayak?  I know some people have done this.  Has anyone ever had their kayak mounts torn out from the stress of too much weight?

If this is the mount that is supporting your DR, then I'd say yes.  It provides piece of mind if nothing else!  If you don't have a backing, you'd better use pretty big washers.

I'll try and post pictures tonight.

Okay, no downrigger on the triple rod mount.  Barefoot1, please let me know how your downrigger set up works out.  I haven't bought mine yet, so if it works really well, I can buy the clamp mounts.

Thanks everyone.

I'll let you know.  Ben says you just have to re-tighten it every once in a while.  I really don't think there is any way it can come completely loose, but I'll see this Saturday.  I had to buy the "clamp on bracket" ($30.00) for my DR since I plan on moving it from the P-15 to the Revo, but if you decide to go this route (carry handle mount) you could just buy the Laketroller Gunwall Mount version.  It would be a bit cheaper but I don't think you can ever go "flush mount" with that model. ----I'll get pics and let you know if this works out to my satisfaction.------Jeff
