I'm looking to outfit my kayak with an inexpensive fish finder. I mainly want it for depth and temp, and I don't need GPS. I have been looking around at a bunch, but I'm not sure which ones are the best for kayaks. I know I'm about to open a can of worms but I'll ask anyways. Does anybody have a favorite unit they would recommend for around $150?

P.S I will be using a scupper mount for my transducer.

I just picked up an Eagle 300 (I think) for $89 - it's like my old one (Eagle Fish Easy 245 DS - I think), but it's not scupper-ducer.

They're getting prety inexpensive.  Good luck.   :smt001

Eagle 245DS tough basic unit  most are comparable just make sure you get a dual beam transducer
Group IQ is inversely proportional to the size of the group.

I fried my 245DS through carelessness, and I wanted another one so I could re-use the same wire/ducer.  I found out they've been discontinued, so I guess the Eagle Cuda 300 is the replacement - looks like it'll take my wire/ducer.

Think I saw it down here in SJ for $69.  I was Coyote Bait & Tackle today and it was on the counter with a sale sign but I didn't pay too much attention since I wasn't in the market for one.  They had 2 of them.

Thanks for the heads up. I will check this one out. I've heard about a pool noodle transducer but I've never seen how it works. I will try and google that. Thanks for all the help guys. I will let you know when I get it set up.

I'm going back today, I'll double check on the price if I remember.

As for the pool noodle transducer, you don't need to google it, but rather just use the search function on this site.  There are plenty of people who have used it here.

:smt048 Funny you should say that, I googled it and it took me right back to the NCKA Fourm haha. Why should I ever stray. Seems easy enough and it would be super simple install on my yak.

I have a ton of closed cell foam from kayak outfitting, it seems like that would do the job just as well?
What is the Goop stuff everyone talks about? Is that the actual name of the product?
Where would one fine it?

Thanks for all the great info.

Marine GOOP I get it at West Marine.  It's a semi-flexible epoxy type material.

The Eagle 300 was in fact $69.99 and they have 2 of them.  I asked the gentlemen if they'd work out a deal if you sent money and he said they probably would.

Paddleboy,   just finished rigging a Humminbird  160.    Super easy ,  cost 89 @ WMAR.      I rigged the transducer externally to my transom  ( yeah this yak has a transom )  .   Benefit is it reads the temperature better than thru-hull  ( inside ) mounting.      Easy install, easy to remove and pack away too.   I like the plug-in connectors for it, seems like a tight seal.
I saved the packaging and cut  it out  to use  as a temporary cover / shield for the unit. ... OC disorder!

What kayak are you installing this on by the way?

Humminbird Fishfinder 570  Under 200 bucks. Good graphics. If you are installing on an OceanKayak use the scupper transducer by all means if your OK has the scupper hole to accomodate the transducer.  Inside the hull is in the way if you have to store gear below deck. The 570 will give you surface water temp.

Sports Chalet online has the 565 which is basically the older 570 for $159 with free shipping Paddleboy84. I have this model on my Trident, it has the dual beam, water temp,640V x 320H display, Split Screen Zoom,Real Time Sonar RTS Window, etc.
