Apparently the grocery getter in the house noticed that we were using way too much rice to continue without some sort of change.  So, on Saturday I came home to 30# of sticky rice on the counter  :)  yay

we have nearly completed the eviction of bread from the house (except for specific meals)

next up:  my arch enemy.....Diet Coke
at least its not as bad as this poor lady's diet coke "problem"  :smt004

good thing the wok is all seasoned and ready, the winter greens need to go, and we have rice  :)

Watch out rice is very addicting.   :smt001 Once you're hooked your hooked.  Soon you will need it for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

I'm a Calrose boy myself. I'll never forget a few years ago, I went camping with the inlaws and friends who were Korean. Breakfast consisted of steamed rice with Kim-Chi and eggs. Nothing like waking up to the sound of a generator running and powering what must have been the biggest rice cooker I have ever seen. I must admit, I am quite a Kim-Chi nut myself so I was on cloud nine. I don't know how many pounds of rice were eaten that trip but the Kim-Chi was home made, done just right and there must have been the equivalent of a five gallon bucket's worth there. Needless to say, between the whole group of people that weekend, it was gone in quick fashion.

Good times.

Try Basmati rice (you can get it Cost-Co 15#?? bags). Long grain with a glycemic index that supposedly approaches that of regular brown rice -- very tasty stuff.

Of course the ultimate for slowing glycemic spikes is brown Basmati, but it's chewy just like any other brown rice. I like it, but I never could get anyone else in the house to eat it.  :smt001

I grew up on a meat and potatoes diet with eggs and toast for breatfast. Watching my son's load up on rice and curry in the AM always made me look twice  :smt005

yeah, I think I prefer sushi rice for everyday use, but Calrose and basmati are really good too  :)  and I also like to mix things up with some black sweet rice from time to time.

Chryss seems to prefer the sticky rice to the sushi rice...

might need to check the GI before the next refill  :)

according to my wife we only use the "small" (20#) bags, and that is somehow some sort of disgrace...LOL

I like the "Red Cargo Rice" (I think they used to use it as ballast cargo because it was so common.) I find at Ranch 99 Market -Reddish brown, holds together better than brown, and looks good on the plate, got enough fiber in it to satisfy a horse.
If you're hooked on white rice (or white potatoes, white bread, or sugar), keep in mind that Glucose testing kits aren't very expensive (or borrow one) and might save you a lot of grief if you're someone who is unknowingly prone to type 2 diabetes.

When I was  kid and work weight limits didnt exist yet, we bought ours in 100 pound canvas type bags.  They then went to 80 pounds, then 50.  It was a sign of manhood to bring the rice into the house with dragging it.

the unfortunate side effect of all that rice is that as Toms notes, white medium grain rice is essentially white sugar to a person with diabetic tendencies.  Trust me, I know  :smt012

haha funny thread - I grew up in Ireland, but my wife is Korean - so I made the slow painful transition from bread/potatoes to mostly rice everyday.  We also eat tons on Kim Chee.  I love Korean food now and find it incredibly healthy and tasty, but we do buy the 20# bags also - but we sometimes mix a little white rice with more brown to give a better texture.  We also buy the mixed and mis it with brown, so we end up with brown with red beans, millet, oats, barley etc already cooked in - super healthy and it's great.

Cheers.

True!

Watch out for certain rice they will make you stuffed compared to others but you will loose the sweet taste.  And yes sticky rice is damm good because you only need your fingers and no eating utensils.  Make sure you count your calories in that rice...especially if your Asian or else you'll end fat.  So portion your rice or you'll become a victum like me.
