Well, it's getting close to that time of year again. Looking for local intel to see if there are any night surf fish running yet. Once I get word a formal hookup will follow. We have three nets and the more the merrier!

One of last years attempts...

Here's some intel for us northerners:  Usal beach has been productive.  I'm thinking about getting up there maybe this weekend if the swell's not too big.

Oh, Usal Beach pretty much defines the term "middle of nowhere."

Non related threadjack ,

I have spent countless hours in Ft Bragg over the last 25 yrs, have always wanted to get to Usal but just never got around to it, so one day a couple years ago, starting in My home town of Martinez we drove 251 miles, which put us on a dirt road hundreds of feet above the pacific, and about halfway between the Usal camp and where we turned off Hiwy 1.

In rough terms we had driven 251 miles and I think we had like less than 4 to go to get there and the GF freaks, She's prone to car sickness, and is scared shitless on roads that drop into the ocean, but over the years she has put up with countless trips up on the coast but, this particular time pushed her over the edge,

needless to say I have never been to Usal Beach..

Same here if it's not to far I'll go.  Have a throw net that I've used back in the Martin's beach days for day smelt.  Don't know if I can still throw it.

If I can work it around my schedule, I'd be more than happy to join y'all! :D I've always been interested in catching surf smelt, especially after watching Kirk Lombard doing it with great amusement  :smt003

Plus that possibility of meeting up with many of you who I have much respect for makes it even that much more desirable :D

I'll be keeping my eye on this, thanks again!

I read the report in the link.  This looks like a lot of fun and I would love to more.  How much do you catch when your on them? Materials needed?  what do you do with the fish?  Food? Bait? etc.  Good conditions for going?  I would love to get out there with you

Would it be easier to paddle across the lagoon than walk from the gate?

Ha, not going to be fooled this year. Already made contact with the rangers out at Salmon Creek and I am going to register for the combo and gate pass this time :smt013

Going Fishing?
Winds from the south, hook in
    the mouth.
Wind from the east, bite the least.
Wind from the north, further off.
Wind from the west, bite the

Hey folks, any news on finding some night smelt? Monkeyface Kirk mentioned to me that he'd been catching them in the last few weeks, so I guess they've been running. I'd like to tag along if anyone's still up for going.
