Damn!!!  Now thats a big kitty!  :smt007  Need to get my waders on this weekend and setup my cam across the stream and see what comes up!  Also need to take a trip over to LS soon too... When is hunting season over there?

p.s. thought for sure the title of your post was about this:

"A ship in harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are built for."

Damn!  Looks like kitty was hot on their trail eh?  Fascinating to look in on nature. I can see the value in one of those cameras for sure. Can you use a smart phone to view those pics, or are you limited to a computer?

Carry a sidearm Joel? Why? If a lion wants you, and gets you ambush style, you are Puma-poop, sure as shootin' your now lonely sidearm.

Sure why not. If I was ambushed and the cat has me on a choke hold, It would most likely take me less than a minute to draw my sidearm and put a few shots in it's body. And if the cat still doesn't let go and kills me right there and then, the cat wins....for a while at least :smt002 I just don't understand why Cal hunting laws does not allow you to defend yourself if your primary weapon fails you (and I'm sure it's happened even to the best hunters). I guess I'm always thinking "Plan B"  :smt045

Sorry Joel, my money's on the cat, with no extra holes. It is out there doing what it has done for eons, and is good at it, gun or no. If its teeth are in your neck, or throat, do you really think you'll have the presence of mind to draw and shoot? And hit it? I think not. You might get a shot off and scare it away, but you'd be hurtin' fer certain. I think a doe deer would put up more of a fight than a soft human.
I think CA law just doesn't want guys out there taking unfair advantage with the sidearm. I'm fine by it.
If you don't know where you're headed, any road could get you there.

Wow... you weren't kidding at the campfire saturday night. Those pix are too cool. I haven't been out there that many times but, I have covered some ground. Haven't seen any kitty tracks... yet. That deer didn't have a chance... once the cat had his hooks in her... she was a goner.

maybe, maybe not  :smt102 But I can tell you this, I'm not going down without a fight. I believe every victim, man or animal will have the basic instinct to fight for self perseverance. I read a couple of books on Bear Encounters of Alaska (Sean / piscean gave to me) and there were instances where bear attack survivors beat the odds by simply being prepared for the worse case scenario (side arm, pepper spray and even with a knife) What I have learned from these survivors and their experiences is that to never underestimate a human beings will to survive in a given effed-up scenario.

But like you said, "presence of mind" is the key word. If you panic, you are most likely to make the wrong decisions and end up in harms way a lot quicker.

Sorry Joel, my money's on the cat

Right now, I'm practicing my hunters survival skills by wrestling with this killer......so I suggest you think twice about putting your money against da mooch  :smt066

Hope you don't mind Juan. here is aomething my Bro sent me:

Hello all: see attached photos.

Background: My brother, Daniel, was visiting a friend in Montana and
touring through Glacier National Park. They were hiking up a CLOSED ROAD
when they came upon this scene. It is evident that the mountain lion and
bighorn sheep were fighting on the mountain and fell to their immediate
death sometime during the struggle. Pay special attention to the mouth of
the mountain lion.....as it still has sheep hide in its mouth!!!! ENJOY!

Great pics.... and especially spooky knowing I was bowhunting around the same area at that same time of day.   I wonder if that big cat was watching me.

I know that chance of being attacked while hunting is slim, but it doesn't make any more comforting when you're out there solo with nothing more than sticks and strings.

I just don't understand why Cal hunting laws does not allow you to defend yourself if your primary weapon fails you

Because it's the hunters word agains the (dead) cat's.
How easy would it be for an unscrupulous hunter to claim the cat came out of nowhere to attack him and his only defense was to shoot the cat?
Guys like that would only bring their bow for show.

If it was safe and easy everyone would do it.  I think it's only fair, if you take...  you have a chance of being taken.

I can almost guarantee that cat knows exactly who's in the area, just like you would know if someone walked into our houses.
