Hey NCKA - thanks for all the input and help on choosing my first yak.  After some demos and a final demo of the Hobie Outback, I bought a discount demo Hobie Outback today.  I really enjoyed it and am looking forward to some fun and productive trips in her.  Going to take her out for my first trip tomorrow.  I was reluctant to get a 2nd hand demo, but in the end it was a great deal, and I'm pretty happy with it.  No idea how to rig it any different than stock, and no idea what I really need to get going, but I got a Yak, a PFD, and a rod, can't be too far wrong I hope :)

See you on the water, will post some pics when I get her on the lake.

You are on the right site to get all the info you need on rigging, safety issues, and advice.  Welcomr to the madness!  NCKA events are also great places to get firt hand info and see rigged yaks.------Jeff

WTG on your new ride bro. There are some rigging tips on the Outback including
my first kayak of which my good friend Hobie-Dave bought from me. Have a great
time of the water.

Congratulations on the new ride! The madness is taking hold of you. Watch for hookups in your area and go see what others have done to theirs.
Never argue with an idiot. They'll just drag you down to their level, and beat you with experience.

Thanks for the positive support guys - much appreciated.  Excited to be into the sport and getting my start, lots to learn.  Definitely have to do some checking on rigging, seems daunting.

Checking out how others have their ride rigged is a good start but before you duplicate a mod fish the bare boat and see if it will work for you.  Angles, equipment location, tiedown anchor points....gotta make sure none of it will be in the way before you start drilling.

That's what I'm doing with my new boat right now. Remember that you may have to re-board the boat after falling out. Try to avoid putting stuff in the way of getting back in.

I have decided to fish the boat as is for some time.  I really don't know enough yet to make a good assessment of where anything should go.  I would like to fit a FF first, and I think it can be done on a Hobie Outback fairly safely, in terms of position, they even have a kit and video on it.  Everything else will wait, I am going to fiddle with different ideas done rough until I get a really good picture of what I need.  Once I get that "man I wish I had one of those right there" moments, then I will consider the rigging.

Thanks for all the input.

Where'd you get the outback at?

Hi Jude, I got it from Kayak Connection in Moss Landing, I also discussed one at their Santa Cruz location, and I talked to a guy in Livermore that has a bunch of most models.  A couple others were willing to order new for me and were very kind, but I thought the risk on the demo boat was ok.  I hope I am not wrong :)

Welcome to the "Dark side"!   :smt044  There are a few of us here that have OB's and have them rigged up. (Me included) Yes, adding a FF to the OB is easy.  Many posts on how to do it.  I have pictures somewhere of my install, (Sadly not on this pc though) Take your time, and as mentioned, fish in it first, to get a feel of it, and make mental notes of where you'd like things to be.  Pay careful attention to rod holder placement up front!  your knees might hit the butt end of rods while peddling if you place the rod holder incorrectly! :smt044

I am kind of a clutter wh*% and I like to have some stuff up near me, especially my phone in a plano waterbox.  I also find that stock OB doesn't seem to have enough places for me to "leash" things or make tie-ons.  The built in rod holders seem useful for basic stuff, but I really don't feel they are solid enough to fish from and can see already wanting more sophisticated options in rod mounts.  The FF/GPS will for sure have to come soon and be fit.  If I could fit a holding bracket for my iPhone and throw it in a waterproof iPhone case, that would be sweet - then I could work, fish, and talk all at the same time  :smt044

I am also still trying to work out the best way to string keeper fish that I hope and expect to one day catch.  I am still puzzled by the rear hatch, as it is too far back to get to from the water, and anything I put in it will fall around the hull, so I am trying to find a solution for making it useful.  I also need a more versatile tackle solution within arms reach, than just the little tackle box built into the OB hatch in front of the seat.

PFD is a little uncomfortable against the OB seat, might need to work on that also.  Also need to work out what to wear on my yak in sunny/hot weather without getting burnt again.  All in all, it's going great, loving the yak, building confidence, and hoping to get to scream "FISH ON" to myself on the water soon.

Thanks for all the support.

I would get a little playmate with ice for the fish. They make hatch bags for the hobies, basically little drawstring bags with a hoop that pop into the hatch, keeps smaller stuff from rattling around the hull. I think they make insert options with tackle box slots as well. Alot of anglers put custom or bought crates right behind the seat for easy access storage. You need a highback  PFD like the STOHLQUIST fishermans vest, theres no lumbar flotation which leaves room for backrests & you can stick little planos in the pockets. In kayak fishing I try to do my pole rigging the night before and have a couple premade setups incase I lose a rig or need options, its all about preparing before you hit the water. Good luck man, nothing like beginners luck!
