I've been lurking and learning all that I can.  I sold my boat and am wanting to get into kayak fishing.  My wife used to kayak the Morro Bay area.  I understand that everything is a compromise and that I'd be better off with two kayaks, but that isn't in the cards right now.  I'm 5'10" 190# and my wife is 130#.  I will use it 75% of the time fishing from the center position and 25% of the time tandem.  Locations will be Monterey Bay, San Luis Reservoir, Don Pedro and New Mellones.  I will either be drifting bait or trolling while fishing.  It seems like the Classic would be more manageable while solo and the XL would be better while tandem.  I'm looking for any input on which is the better compromise.  Thank you.

Get the XL it's a little faster and has more mounting options for gear, little more room to streach out with two paddlers.
Group IQ is inversely proportional to the size of the group.

A Steelhead always knows where he is going, but a Man seldom does.

I paddle an XL from the center position and have rigged it for fishing.
Not the fastest boat in the Navy but very stable.

Malibu 2XL is faster, tracks better and is more stable. The main advantage of the classic is lighter weight. The Tarpon 13 is the heaviest of the 3 and the same speed as the 2XL but is slightly better in the surf. I have owned two 2XL's and have loved them and hated them. If you have kids, dogs or guide for newbies, the 2XL is great. If you are paddling long distances in wind, swell or current the 2XL sucks. Rigging a 3 seat tandem also sucks. All that said, as long as I own a dog, I will own a 2XL. The zest and hobie are faster but much heavier.
