I've seen a lot of talk about having them on you, what are some of the decent brands everyone is using? Good things bad things, etc? Do you want only emergancy channels or is there a lot of chit chat going on out there?

You can find lots of topics or info using the search function.  Click on the "Forum" tab, the type the key word (i.e. VHF) and you'll see all the old posts with VHF in it.  Here is one of the many links I've found by doing so:

I've tried some of the cheaper ones and expensive ones as well.

for me the Standard Horizon models work well, good range, and seem less prone to water damage.
They are also among the least expensive.
Got mine for around $90

I've been using the $90 SH model for the past 2 years on the salt w/o problems. It doesn't float, but it's tethered to my pfd at all times in case i get separated from my yak
