Some great advice here. I'd just like to say I would be careful of the military option. I was conscripted at 17. Nowdays that shit is for real. Ihave 3 Iraq/Afgan vets living nexto me. They endured a living nightmare without the material or leadership support needed. He could come back in a  casket or permanently injured. He will come back with ptsd. Let the globalist corporations do their own bidding. They are the real enemy of the American people. The peace corps may be an option if he wants/needs structure.
Good luck

The Peace Corps requires that you have a Bachelors Degree, so it wouldn't be an option in this situation....

My two years in the Peace Corps for me was one of the best experiences of my life....definitely changed me for the better.

I don't know what is required for AmeriCorps, California Conservation Corps etc though...

If he wants to stay in the house, he must attend a Martial Arts class, one that the teacher is allowed to hit him hard. He'll thank you in a few years...great discipline, learning respect the right way, strength, self defense, might even be a career...good luck Bro!

If you won the Lotto, what would you spend the rest of your life doing?  The answer to that, is what your career path should be.

what if the answer is hang around the house, play video games and get stoned every day?  Congress?  :smt044

Andy I used to work in a kiddie prison.  Post juvenile hall but not the youth authority.  I worked in the school attached to the facility.  these kids make Porky sound like a saint.  The most important lesson learned there is that actions have consequences.  Those that accepted responsibility did well, those that didnt, did not.  Make him earn his keep.  If he cant find a job now, make him bring back applications from hoofing it.  Make him clean the house, paint the house, weed the yard, wash the car, etc.  If he doesnt learn this while in the embrace of Mom and someone as cool as you, he probably will never learn it.

I was a pot smoking unemployed leach of a teenager myself. On my 18th birthday my Dad said I love you but you're not in school so you have to move out. He gave me one week. Found a job grinding steel for 70 hours a week. Best thing the old man ever did for me, It made a man out of me and made me appreciate everything more. I think a kid needs to learn that he can survive off his own labor and sweat. That sense of independence feels good at that age. He just doesn't know that yet. Never again have I been unemployed or a leach.   :smoke

Hey Andy,

I've been faced with the situation. Your spouse has to be on the same page as you or your both wasting your time. I told my kids to include my twins that you know who will be 18 in just two week the rules if they want to stay in my house. See the following.

1. If your a full time student and playing sports you can live in my house and I will support you.
2. If your a full time student and not playing sports you can live in my house but you need to have a part time job and help out by paying a bill each month that you both agree on.
3. If your a part time student and not playing sports you can live in my house but you will be paying rent as to what you both agree on.
4. If your not going to school you can live in my house as long as you are working and paying rent as agreed.

In all cases above it is a requirement to help out around the house. Time to grow up and face the facts.

I was faced with the same problem as you with our oldest son and had to ask him to leave when he was 20. Of course I was hated for about two years but he now calls me almost every day. It is not easy to be a good parent, and at time is difficult to make the hard decisions. But, that's part of the job!

Good luck Andy. I think your on the right track.

Ben

One more thing, my son is now in the Army and loves it. The Army provides him the structure, discipline and life experience he needs. This was his choice to join and it has worked out well for him.

As smart as we all are sometimes we need to seek advice and guidance from a profession.  If you have no other choice look into your local city/county Counseling, Alcohol and Drug services for him.

Wanna smoke weed and play video games.  Pursue a job at Game Stop or some video game store like that.  There is a job out there for everyone.  Good post Ben.  NCKA is so damn cool.  Glad I found you guys.
