Just got a couple OK XT Scramblers and was told the wheels that fit the scupper holes were not a good idea as this area is weaker than other kayaks , ie Hobie . Any thoughts on this and what may be the better idea , frame / wheels that cradle the kayak ? Also what type wheels are best or best compromise for beach and mountian lakes / streams ?

Thanks , Dan

Best bet is to search the posts, TONS of discussions on this over the years.

Bottom line-don't use scupper hole versions. Skinny wheels-ok for hard/flat terrain, balloon tires for the rest.

I've logged lots and lots of sand, gravel, dirt, pavement and other miles on these.  Watch out for the knock-off, cheaper version wheels...

I have the scupper hole type, they suck. You can't use them on sand, an if you overload your yak either the crap wheels will break or your yak. Get the wheeleez, they are on my list of wants

I'm a stubborn do it your self or in this case build it your self guy, I have made and and checked out a ton of carts, I even went so far as to buy a set of the good wheeleze tires for one of my homemade carts,

I finally broke down and bought the wheeleze cart in the link a couple of posts up, it works great on any surface, and I believe there are allot of stories like mine,

It's the one.

+1 (and yes, I'll also bet dollars to donuts many many others)

If I were to try & engineer a cart, I'd use heavy wall aluminum tube & nice fat pneumatic tires...just like wheeleeze. You pay, but you generally get what you pay for.

That's not the Mooch way this is
