There are some good deals on there!
While on the subject, here's a site that sells factory refurbished reels for cheap: http://www.ffo-tackle.com/ProductDirectory.cfm?Show=Reels

Good deals indeed,
Just curious how you guys found out about what that tackle was. Did you go to a local tackle shop and spend the time of the sales person asking for info about this stuff than stab him in the back so you can get a better deal on line? I hate to put it this way but it seems that in retail there seems to be less and less customer loyalty. There are local shops who have sales staff that actually fish and have probably helped most of you learn how to catch your desired species and now it seems that they are being taken advantage of just to save a buck or two. I'm not saying all on line companies are this way but the next time you shop on line at least ask for an explanation about what you are buying. If the person on the phone reads the add and has no other info than your purchase will probably be putting one of your fishing mentors closer to unemployment.
I recently had a customer come in to the shop with a big box catalog and ask if I could match the price (fair question) I read the add and than had to reply that I could not since it was not the same item (Lowrance HDS 5) the customer informed me he was told by the person on the customer service line that it was the same so he told me that I was trying to screw him and he would never shop with me again. About 2 weeks later the same customer came in (to my surprise) and asked if I could help him with a problem. Sceptically I asked what the problem was and he asked if I could show him how to get the map to show on his new locator. This put me in a bad situation as I had to inform him that on his prior visit I had tried to tell him but he refused to listen when I told him it was a different unit. The unit he purchased was a base unit (no maps ) which they had sold for the same price as we sell the advanced unit (complete with topo and 3D maps). Had the on line customer service expert known what he was selling or the customer wasn't in such a hurry to get a great deal he could have saved a lot of time and extra shipping cost. I see this happen quite a bit but the bad news is if the local retail shop spends all this time to educate you than you take your money to the cheapest place you can find eventually the local guys wont be around to help when these things happen.
Sorry if I'm rambling and I'll get off my soap box now

Please do get off your soapbox.  There's no need to make a federal case out of this.  I was looking for saltwater tackle online as here in Redding we have a very limited selection.  Found good prices on a site, shared it with others.  Big fu$%ing deal.

No, I'm not out to "stab anybody in the back" as you put it.  If I can find my stuff local at a competitive price, I'll buy it.  If I can find it for a shit load less online, I'll buy it there.

I think its a legit issue.  For the most part I'm pretty much the opposite of the guy you dealt with.  I learn about stuff and do my research online (forums/tackle dealers) and through magazines and then go to the shop too see stuff in person and compare prices.  I generally go in knowing what I want and don't need too much advise or product related interaction but I usually BS as much as I can to get intel on the bite.  For reels and rods I can't purchase based on specs alone, I HAVE to pick em up, whip em around see how they fit in my hands etc.  Pricewise, unless the shop isn't even in the ball park I don't mind spending a couple extra bucks for being able to have it now (yes, I'm impulsive), I know what I'm getting (no hassles of them shipping teh wrong stuff), I can return it that much easier and I can buy last minute.

Actually, aside from boat parts and random gear from hook1 I don't think I've ever purchased any fishing equipment online.  We are lucky to quality shops close by in the bay area though, can't say I'd do the same if was in the boonies.

Chill pal!  Knowing Eric, I feel pretty confident in saying that he wasn't trying to attack or harass anybody.  This is his livelihood and just wants people to think about the pros and cons of internet purchasing vs. brick and mortar.

I think most here agree w/your stance on buying local, Eric. Thanks for the reminder.
But IMO it's also ok to take advantage of online deals every now and then (not all online retailers are run by greedy corporate big box companies).
Just for perspective, I kinda consider FW to be somewhat of a big chain retailer, when it comes to fishing supplies. I'd still shop there if it was local, though...mainly to validate the effort you've put into promoting kayak fishing (honestly, I haven't been to a FW since Glenn was fired from the SJ store, but I have bought some stuff through their website).
For me, it's all about J&D's Auto/Gone Fishin (in Sand City) and The Tackle Box (in Salinas).

With only 2 years, I still consider myself a newb (it shows in my reports  :smt003).  I've gotten a lot of good advice from NCKA, but also when I'm in the store.

For example, when I went WSB hunting for the first time, I got a lot of advice from NCKA bros.  Then when I went to FW in Cupertino near my office, I got a lot of good advice from John (the young kid).  I ended up purchasing an Avet  reel and a rod based on what I thought was good advice, not salesmanship.  He put on some line on the reel ( I won't say how much, b/c it was literally a steal), and he even made some leaders for me (I paid for the materials).  During that whole time, got some good advice.  I value someone taking their time to give me good advice, especially as an attorney- and value it even more when they're making my leaders  :smt003

I shop local if I can.  Of all the stuff I've bought so far, I haven't seen an online deal for new gear so great that I'd shop online.  But if I'm knowledgeable about the gear and do find a spectacular deal, I'd buy online.  I think it's a comfort level thing.  I buy all my photographic equipment online b/c I know my stuff, but wouldn't do the same for fishing gear - unless it came with really good NCKA advice.

I can see both sides to this equation.  Just giving you a newbie's perspective.
As someone said in a previous thread, "have a beer on me" and look forward to seeing y'all at the next event.

Sorry to ramble.

It's all good an no hard feelings, I just don't appreciate getting called out as a backstabber from someone I've never met, when my intention was merely to share info with others.

Its all good, but Eric is one of the most generous people we have here. I totally understand both sides the only thing I have is Big 5 or Kmart and have to plan special trips to buy at Fw 112 mi. round trip. I still made most of my purchases there  last year so I could get advice in person. I also have to admit I made the drive because of Eric.

actually I took my small company online cuz the big greedy corporate big box companies wanted to kill my business.  And last time I looked Hook 1 wasnt publicly traded (yet)  :smt004

Eric, love you bro, just keep on providing service and for those that it matters, they will continue to shop with FW.  Like AGarcia I like to touch the stuff I buy and besides I cant spend the cash I print at home online  :smt003

I buy my running shoes from the same mom and pop store Ive been going to since high school.  I could save a few bucks at zappos but I like the owner and he always steer me to the right shoe for my spatula foot.
