Wow!  I remember seeing something similar to this on television some years ago.  These little lakes would form once a year when nearby rivers would flood and spread across the floodplain.  Fish would get trapped in the leftover lakes as the rivers receded, and then the tribespeople would fish out the little lakes once a year.
