Let me start off by saying that before I joined NCKA I was kayak fishing in San Luis Obispo while going to college.  I've fished my entire life, but I learned a great deal about rigging/ and DIY kayak fishing from this forum.  I'd just like to say thanks to all who share their knowledge.   :smt001

So, I woke up abnormally early and decided to hit the Port for a second day in a row.  Slid off the boat ramp at 8:00 am and fished till about 12:00.  Fished with "FishWorks" (Ricci) for a bit, and ran into Jim and Adam on the way in.  (It was great to meet you guys, BTW)  I targeted crappie exclusively today with minnows fished on a 1/4 ounce jighead.  Managed to catch 6 total.  Got 2 legit "slabs" at 13" and 4 others about 8" or so.  All fish were in 25-30' of water, hugging the bottom.  The day was a success as I had my best crappie outing by far.   :smt003

Awesome - I've only managed to pull 2 crappie out of the port so far; jig head = brilliant.

Thanks for the report - hope to see you out there soon,

Nice puzzle solving Rawyak!
Dug out some jig heads last nite and will try your technique on Sat.
Was talking to Striper Slayer last nite and we both were all "DUH" that's why it's called a Crappie Jig :smt044
BTW: thanks for that blue gill you gave me a while back, I ended up gifting it to Naoaki.

Good to meet you RAW, and nice to chill Ricci!!

Adam and I each landed 2 fish, I had a small smallie and one keeper Striper (19..5") and Adam had one schoolie and a 21.75" lineside  :)

THANKS to Adam for bringing fish paint!!!  I was up until 11:00 printing...then cleaned those 2 fish  :)  Its a good thing it was freezing outside  :)

Team IONA Kayak Fishing is on the board today  :)

Welcome RAWYAK!  Nice report.  Wish I knew about kayak fishing when I spent my time down at Cal Poly.  Although, on second thought, probably better I didn't because I'd have never gone to class.

Jim, I think your "smallie" is actually a "largie."  Could be wrong but the colors don't seem right for a smallie.  Also, love the fish print, that is top notch.

I was thinking the same -I've caught several of those little bass in there and I've always identified them as juvenile LMBs - so either IDK the difference or dilbeck is right...  Big Gabe had an ambiguously marked bass last week that I think he initially thought was a smallie, but I  may have talked him out of it with my "certainty" about all the small LMs in there... I need a ruling - I thought our smallies had less color change at the abdomen and more vertical striping  - so when I see the horizontal diamond along the lateral line and the white belly, I think LMB

anyone?

hmmm, yes, that smallmouth was a challenge.  Though I did the mouth/eye measurement trick and it fit smallmouth...I agree that those other bass from teh port look like largemouth..who knows, with the various strains out there (large, small, spot, FL strain) its entirely possible that this was a mutt  :)

It's often hard for me to identify bass when they don't really fit the typical look of any of the three common species. The three I caught were probably juvenile LMB's, but I'll never know for sure since I don't have a pic. The LMB's I remember always had a line down the side and the spots had the same line but some vertical marks along the line. The smallies had mostly vertical marks down the side. I should have paid attention to the mouth vs. the eye and I would have known. Oh well...next time.

Take a look at this site. The ones I caught had marking that most closely resembled the small mouth. That being said I think I still agree with exhibit. I'm leaning toward baby LMB.

Never argue with an idiot. They'll just drag you down to their level, and beat you with experience.

exhibita,
I think the three in your pics clearly look like LMB's. They have the markings down the side.
