I have 4 Shimano spinning reels and EVERYONE  of them starts to bind up and stick intermtently.  :smt013 It can become infuriating when your trying to reel slowly and it keeps sticking like theres a bent shaft or something and then all of a sudden it goes away for a while. Then back again. No it is not dropped, abused, not maintained or any of those more obvious things. I did a little google search on it and saw other describe the exact same thing. Some said it happened when they were exposed to rain, but I've had it many times in dry weather. Other than this problem I love the reels, but I don't see myself ever buying another Shimano. Anyone got any feed back on the problem, what to do about it? Also any reels you recomend in the $100-150 range?

I'm so rough on my gear that I'll sacrifice smoothness for bomb-proof reliability.  These have never let me down, and are super easy to clean.

What model is that you're referring to Jonez? I own numerous models and I have not had that problem yet. Perhaps I don't fish often enough or catch enough fish
for the reels to feel strain on them. :smt002

Same for me. I fish in the rain a lot and have dunked my reels in FW plenty of times. No issues w/ drag though.

I have an old shimano spinning reel and it did the same thing, Frustrated  :smt013 the hell out of me until I realized it wasn't the bearings or the actual reel, but right where the line goes under the bail, there was a piece of plastic that nicked apart and the line would get caught between the plastic and the reel, so when i reeled in, it felt sticky, like the tip was wrapped. I finally threw that garbage away  :smt003 good luck!

If you google "shimbindo" you get all sorts of complaints about that, but I've never heard of a solution.
I have a stradic I bought 4 months ago, but I haven't seen any problems yet.
There's a discussion with a shimano rep in the tackel tour forums:

I have a newer Stradic where the drag binds up. Thought I just got a bad one.
So I'm packing my bags for the Misty Mountains, where the spirits go...........

I had the same issue with a Shimano Symetre

I received it for Christmas back in 2007 and almost a year later it bound up.  I was so pissed because it happened just days before the warranty was to expire, and because I wouldn't be able to send it back in time, I tossed it on a shelf to collect dust.  Finally after coming across it a few months ago, I decided I'd try to send it back with some big sob story.  Luckily, I was fortunate and they fixed it for free.

So I guess the moral of the story is to try and send it back as they might fix it free of charge.

I've had the exact same problem with an Okuma Avenger spinning reel.  The reel works perfectly fine when it's dry, but when it gets wet it'll stick like a mofo.  I still don't know why it does it, but I refuse to take that reel on my kayak anymore because it would always start sticking after it got wet.  It's relegated strictly to shore fishing now.

Shimano Stradic FG, or FI are what I use. Love them and find them very reliable. The FI is really sweet.
As for the Mitchell 308, yeah, it was around for my budding years. I wish I still had it, just to spin it. Ah, memories...
