High tech speargun - looked like he used  a piece of innertube for his rubber band. Hope whoever took those pictures fixed him up with a proper mask and fins. Must have some real calluses on his feet to walk on the coral like that.

Brings back memories when I was a teenager back in American Samoa. Me and my brother used to owned those diving gogles and we don't use no weight belt or fins at all.  Makes me appreciated all the different equipments that we got now a days.  My grandfather will smacked me across the head with a 2/4 if he ever find out I'm using a mask with a snorkel, weight belt, fins and spear gun. May he rest in peace.

Its still quite common in the Philippines, I have seen it first hand numerous times.  These fishermen are usually very poor.

His goggles are carved from local wood and I've seen plywood used as fins.  What the video does not tell us is that most likely his ear drums are damaged from the pressure.

My wife's family driver and handyman in the Philippines both used to do this.  They left their home province and moved to the big city for a better life.  I've exchanged a lot of fishing stories with them.
I brought some lures and they were amazed to see a Rapala.

Cheers,

I have a feeling, like the local tossing a cast net in Hawaii told me, he has to be good, cuz if not there's no dinner.

Thought he was being funny at the time but as it sunk in not so much.

Pretty cool but I can't imagine that guy shooting any sizeable fish walking around like that.  Not a very stealthy approach.
