It will make you crazy.

 :smt002 :smt005 :smt044

I picked the ones that made you trip out in highschool from cow patties, but wouldn't recommend eating this one unless somebody else positively IDs it as an edible Bolete.

It's not really a Devils one...I just threw that in there to scare Andy!!   :smt005 :smt008

The Devil's ones have much more vivid colors...

I would say Boletus Edulis:

http://www.mykoweb.com/CAF/species/Boletus_edulis.html

Comments
Boletus edulis is distinguished from other members of the bolete group by a combination of characters: substantial size, a smooth to wrinkled brown to reddish-brown cap surface, drab white pores becoming yellowish olive in age, a usually club-shape stipe with distinctive white reticulations at the apex, mild taste, and absence of color changes. A close relative is Boletus regineus (Queen bolete) which differs in having a darker cap with a whitish wash when young, and occurs with mixed hardwoods as opposed to pines.

BUT!!!!!! You should really have one of the more serious fun-guys ID it for you...

Not worth risking it otherwise.

Sincerely,

Jim

I agree it looks like a porcini (boletus edulis). I just recently found the motherload near where I work, and had an expert do a spore print. they are the second most valuable of the fungus, to the truffle. They are very good eating, and what you can't eat can be preserved in many different ways. Definitely get it checked out. If it is, you will find them in the same places over, & over, as they grow on the roots of coniferous plants. Mostly pine trees in my limited experience.

Hootah!! That looks like that it can do some major damage or trip if it's ID'ed incorrectly. Glad to know that you're being cautious :D

Don't forget the Matsutake, I believe it is there in between Truffles and Porcinis...

It's definitely big enough to be Boletus edulis and looks about right. The only thing that gives me a bit of doubt are the traces of blue. If you cut/stratch the skin does it go blue?

Also, where did you find it? Was it under a tree(s)? If so, what type?

Finally, with ones that big when you cut thru the stem you might find lots of......er......bait.

Fishmaster1,
If you go to www.fungusfed.org you'll find all sorts of info. There's also a Fungus Fair in Santa Cruz on Jan 7/8/9/2011.

Chanterelle's are in my opinion the best of the best. Only eat mushrooms that you can POSSITIVELY identify.

Oh yes the little buggies tend to like the ones we do too. Pick'em early before the little ones hatch :smt003
