This post made me remember a year ago or so before I deleted my account - there was an OG section that I was included in.  I returned to the board with a new name and haven't thought once about that OG section since, until now.  I wonder if it still exists.

(done wondering now - maybe I'll think of it again in a year or two...   probably not.  :smt001)

 Ah Yes....

The OG's,, " OF's " Much Better...  :smt004,

The Doldrums of winter approach, but I must say I think NCKA is doing a better job than ever of being respectful towards each other and remebering it's the good fishing days we really miss, and not pissing on each other as we wait...

Sorry to be out of the loop, computer crashing, injuries and kids..  Oh My....

Back to the topic at hand....

but also the fact that even those who "think" they know how to do this can and will get themselves in trouble.
So to all who are NCKA be smart, be safe and be ready for those situation that come up that aren't predictable.

This brings up GS4 for me...  I'm out a couple miles with a group, a yaker goes over, OK no problem, he should be able to handle this... not.. he can't get back in his yak, another comes over to help me with this guy. I don't know who he is and it appears he came with someone else and had no clue what he was doing and ovously altered to the point he was helpless... Pissed me off!!  He has the look of death and was just giving up... Pathetic..

Finally, me and the other guy helping, got him back in,

I'm not sure who he was and saw him at the the festivities later that day and again, he was out of it... whatever...

went out the next day in snotty conditions and there he is again,  alone, at least this time he was closer to shore but WTF????

I just went back in and decided to spend the day with my family, not risking my self for stupidity

Simple question that might keep one out of trouble. When I find myself out without people of experience their maybe a reason why their not there!

So Frank does this infer that it's OK to follow OF's where ever they may roam ? :smt011

The way I understand it, they are sort of like the knights templar. I heard they have a special goblet that bill once drank from.

Having been in the washing machine type of surf that came up with the whether can be a scary proposition. No I wouldn't follow anyone into that but would instead talk anyone away from these conditions (today).
I learned a valuable lesson on the Big Sur coast with this type of surf  and got myself into trouble. The wind was really blowing and as Blue said in his post, I felt like I was going backwards. I beached in that case and with the crews help walked the kayak out.
With that said, it was my call on beaching  and I knew I had better head in before I lost all my strength fighting the wind and surf. Others with me were and are much more accomplished Kayakers who differently earned my respect.
This was a case of paying attention to fishing and not the conditions. Things change quickly on the ocean.

This post was initially started to let the newbie know what they can expect when going out. I have seen guys on our board fall into the water on lakes that couldn't self rescue and had to be assisted. Would rather see someone expose themselves to self rescue in a lake then the big blue.
I don't mind posting my close calls in hopes that it will help others. And I have also witnessed guys get in situations that were caused by mother nature and not a choice.
One such incident involved a good friend and an encounter with a seal that gave him a lap dance. That was not planned for.
Or myself being swamped by a PB at Jaws in HMB and the lesson of why we carry a whistle which got my partners attention, again not planned.
Or hooking into a whale just outside of Jaws, Moss Landing.
So if you have a story to share lets hear it. It could help keep some else from getting into the same situation or how to respond to a situation.

Frank I just think your message was too vague, I feel Safety Messages need to be clear have you ever been to a Safety Meeting or Training Session where they had two sets of rules for Differant People ? The message should be the same anything else is personnel Choice. The only person that I have heard that has good argument for going out alone is Tote but is still a PC not a Safety Argument.

One thing I see is a lot of is guys wearing cotton hoodies out on the ocean. Imo, that is a bad idea. Cotton holds water and becomes very heavy and cumbersome. Furthermore, it won't keep you warm when it is wet. As they say in the world of whitewater,"COTTON KILLS".

Mick, Got ya on that and I'll keep my comments on track. Having attended more then my share of those types of lectures and meetings I understand your concern. We have had some great interaction and I respect your input.
I do not make judgment on those who paddle alone. But I see how someone new to our sport may try going it alone without the experience of those who do. For me I have faced way to many incidents which could have ended badly and not have even been exposed to NCKA. My goal is to Kayak safely, make my catch for me and my family and also enjoy the camaraderie of this group.
Maybe even enjoy a paddle with that ghostly figure...kayakjack.
By the way hoodies are for camp sites and not foul weather gear on a Yak.
