A knowledgeable guy at OPS said that he has caught shrimp at 40 feet of water off of Bodega.  Is this right?

I know that one type of prawn is found only in deep water, but is there another type of shrimp that is caught in more shallow waters?

I bought the shrimp trap, then afterwards was told by others that you have to be in 150-200 feet of water to catch shrimp.  But the guy at OPS says that another type of shrimp (don't remember the name) are caught in only 40 feet of water at Bodega...

The coonstripe shrimps can be found in shallower waters.

They're very good eating.  Have a sweet taste to it.  I just broiled them and eat like pop-corns, no seasoning needed.

Coon Stripes are some of the sweetest prawns period! I prefer them over their larger cousin the Spot Prawn. They are a true prawn which means no poop shoot like warm water shrimp. If you find a hole with these guys I would consider it a major score. They are native from CA through AK.

One thing to watch out for. They are VERY perishable and the heads should be removed from the tails if you are going to store them more than a day before cooking them. I recommend you cook them that day. They will hold several days cooked.

ENJOY

Forgot to mention that ya should look up the regulations for shrimping, but I took a quick look for ya  :smt002

(f) Shrimp and prawn traps may be used to take shrimp and prawns only. Trap openings may not exceed 1/2 inch in any dimension on traps used south of Point Conception nor five inches in any dimension on traps used north of Point Conception.

29.88. Coonstrip e shrimp (Pandalus danae). Twenty pounds (in the shell, heads on) per day. The first 20 pounds taken, regardless of size or condition, shall constitute a daily bag and possession limit.

Course, you should read them yourself, since I didn't read all the sections or anything.  For some reason I remember the bag limit last year being ridiculously small.

Hope you catch them John! :smt006

I'm with Sunny here boil them whole, peel and eat. Don't forget to suck the heads, lots of good juice in there too.

I also like a simple soy sauce with lemon juice ponzu to dip them in. Adds a little something but doesn't over power their naturally sweet flavor.

They say HMB or Doran in about 100+ feet of water.  I'm tempted to go out and try.  I'll keep you posted.

I went once to HMB in 50' depth, but didn't get anything in my shrimp trap...  :smt012

I was able to get some in ~50ft! Either those are huge snails or those shrimp are shrimpy.   :smt002

I'm going enlarge the openings in my minnow trap and hope that will attract the normal sized shrimp.  Also, I was using catfood + squid.

When I went out with Rey, didn't get any shrimp in 150FOW in my traps.  I'd just bring one with you and drop it off in 40-50 fow like nudling suggested.  And btw I was also using canned cat food when I caught them last year.  :smt002

Coonstripes are not large prawns. Try fishing a little deeper 100-150 ft
Here is pretty good quick over view of Coonstripes.
